Sam Adams Utopia - $150 a bottle, 54 proof.

Maker's Mark Bourbon - $30 for 750ml, 90 proof.

Better value, better buzz.

Liquor: the thinking man's beverage.

Yeah, but Utopias is much more complex than regular beer. You wouldn't drink this on a regular basis. More like a special occasion treat. Like a good brandy.

It's actually very good but isn't very beerlike in taste. I don't have that kind of money to spend on booze but a friend bought it and he let me have some.

Tasty, but for $150 I can get a hooker and lots of cheap beer. That sounds like a much better deal.

I gotta try this stuff.

If I were to spend that much on a special occasion treat, I'd buy a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue.

Chuck Hurley, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said the group in general doesn't have a problem with extreme brands of beer like Utopias. However, he hopes the beverage's higher alcohol content is properly labeled and that it isn't marketed to minors.

"Right now, we're reserving judgment," Hurley said.

Yes, minors are going to buy the $150 a bottle beer by giving the homeless guy a pack of smokes outside Walmart...

I wasn't all that impressed with JW Blue... it seemed to go so far down the "how smooth can we make it" path that it didn't have a whole ton of personality...

Yeah, I feel that way about any beer that starts to hover around 10%. If I wanted to get hammered quickly on something that doesn't taste like beer, I've got lots of other options.

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2009-12-01 09:16:35 AM
For example, Alabama and West Virginia recently passed laws to allow higher alcohol content in beer.

We shall never refer to those fair states as backward ever again.

(It's all on you now, Arkansas.)

People don't drink Johnny Walker Blue because they like it... people drink it because they can then brag about it. It's like lighting a cigar with a $50. It sure doesn't make the cigar any better.

We're still capped at like 13%. It's just that the old cap was I think 6%.

Law of diminishing returns. The first few dollars it's easy to tell the difference, after a while it becomes nigh on impossible.

I'd like to try it just to say that I have. It can't be sold in wine/beer only stores here, but a liquor store could order a bottle.

I don't like regular Sam Adams. Why the hell would I pay $150 for more concentrated Sam Adams? I can't imagine refined swill is any more palatable than the swill from whence it came. :(

Utopia is worth every penny.

As far as Makers or walker blue, there are far better bourbons\scotches out there for the price point, especially with walker blue. Not that either are bad, but you are paying for the label in both cases.

Erm...you don't know booze then. That's pretty much just marked up whiskey. The alcoholic equivalent to Prada bags; made in the same way the cheaper stuff is.

This is actually a special brew by a company that has a fairly good reputation for brewing quality.

Sam Adams has a kickass brew that is around 10% or so that actually still tastes like a beer; Sam Adams Imperial White. Awesome brew, and not a bad deal at $10 for a 4 pack.

Thank god for that map, I'd forgotten where Boston was located for a second there.

Here in PA we have the Victory Brewing Company. They have a beer called Golden Monkey that's around 10%. Good beer, but it definitely sneaks up on you.

I shouldn't have been shocked that my comment would have brought out the realms of people who know more about what I like to consume and what my tastes are than I do.

If I had the disposable income to spend this amount on a beer I'd keep my money.

Its a big fat fark you to a company's patronage to give it this price tag.

Unless they can prove that it somehow costs them $140 to make this particular bottle of brew.

FTFA:

The drink comes in a ceramic-and-copper bottle that resembles a tiny brew kettle. Thirteen states prohibit its sale because its alcohol content exceeds the legal limit for beer: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington.

We have some very retarded laws in my state, and this one is right up there with the smoking ban and state liquor stores.

Once again, I'd like to thank Tawnos for hooking me up with a bottle.

Yeah now everyone around here is all about Yuengling, which I was always a fan of... though there are better beers for around the same price.

I would like to try this without spending $150. Maybe they should make more than 10k bottles so a bar or restaurant might have some for me to sip upon.

Amen, we would get Ron Rico Rum or McCormick's Vodka. This old felon who would rent a room from a friend would buy it for us if we would get him a fourty or smoke some pot with him.

shivashakti : It's actually very good but isn't very beerlike in taste.

Haven't tried it yet, but I kinda figured your description would apply. Getting that high of an alcohol content IMO tends to require way too much sweetness, and although I can't speak for Utopias specifically, other 20+ beers I've had all reminded me of nothing so much as the undiluted-Coke-syrup of beers.

KyngNothing : I wasn't all that impressed with JW Blue... it seemed to go so far down the "how smooth can we make it" path that it didn't have a whole ton of personality...

I'll second that. I'll take a good Tullibardine 10 (at a quarter the price) any day of the week. Of course, perhaps it counts as unfair to compare "real" Scotch with a mere Whiskey (and don't even get me started on the bile-overtones-with-subtle-notes-of-urea they sell as "Bourbon"), but i like my drinks to have character and lots of it, not just disguise the ethanol as much as possible.

Great. Another boost in the ABV. When the big beer companies get Congress to re-regulate home-brewing and craft-brewing, you can thank the guys who love bragging how one shotglass of Old Beavershanks Thrice-Hopped Death in a Bottle put them on their ass.

If you want beer, drink beer. If you want hard liquor, drink hard liquor.

To each his own but MADD and the Christian right and Big Brew are going to team up and destroy the best thing that Jimmy Carter ever did.

Actually, the woman who founded MADD quit the group. she said they were too wacko and that she wanted to stop drunk driving, not bring back prohibition. so she quit her own group and doesn't talk about it much any more.
