Same here, Penn State and Florida are the two teams I've always liked.

Bowden got away with a heck of a lot at FSU just because of his aww shucks shtick.

Raptor Jesus 2009-12-01 03:00:52 AM
Good.

I'm not saying that bitterly, I'm just saying that it's time for him to retire. He's had a winning season (barely), and he can now bow out somewhat gracefully. It sure beats getting fired, which would have been a distinct possibility in the future given the direction FSU football has been headed.

I'm a Gator fan at heart, but I have a great deal of respect for what coach Bowden has accomplished in his tenure. To be honest though, he's not getting any younger, and the stress of coaching can't be good for the man. Here's to hoping that he can live out the rest of his life comfortably and happily.

Both of the coaches (Bowden/Paterno) seem like classy guys.

On another note, I just have to say that my vote for the worst, ABSOLUTE worst college football fans goes to Penn State. Hands down.

Sorry if you're a PSU grad and not a complete douchebag, but everyone I've met from there has been. Penn State played us one year too. The fans were the dumbest, drunkest, most violent bunch of losers I have ever seen. Ever.

Even in my professional life when I meet a douchebag (I'm not talking your regular average asshole, I'm talking about a full blown douchebag), it's not long before I find out where they graduated from. Yep...Penn State. Must be something in the water there. Either that, or it's the biggest coincidence in the world that all 20 something people I've met from there are huge douchebags.

Poor Jimbo. I don't see him having much of a chance here. You follow a legend but you inherit a .500 team. One of your in state rivals is at the top of the world and the other seems poised to get back there soon, so recruiting is going to be a b*tch. Don't know about the facilities but I can't imagine a worse economic climate in which to go around asking for donations to a .500 team that just lost the greatest coach they will ever have. But hey, it's what he wanted.

Bobby Bowden just didn't want to leave after a crappy season. Jimbo Fisher's done a good job with the offense and should be a good head coach. Anyways, his retirement could be parlayed into a new year's day bowl game. FSU hasn't seen one of those in years.

Well, a lot of PSU students are from Philly originally - home of the world's worst professional football fans. The rest of us are pretty decent.

varmitydog 2009-12-01 07:50:24 AM
When his wife made those Barbara Bush like comments a couple of weeks ago........."You know, we don't need the university as much as they need us - as much as they need him and his connections and reputation and everything. If they want to pull that trick, we'll just shake the dirt off our feet and go to Europe or go on a long cruise or something. They'll have to fire him for him not to go another year ... If they've got guts enough to do it, let them do it."....you knew they were going to force him out. Only you don't build a statue of someone, put it at the main entrance to your stadium and fire the guy. So he's "retiring after much soul searching".

A sports writer for the Orlando paper penned a reply to Ann Bowden's Marie Antoinette impression:

Bobby Bowden has betrayed Florida State. And, along the way, he has even betrayed himself.
Throughout the years, Bobby has said that if his program ever fell into a state of disrepair and mediocrity, he would hang it up. He has said in the past that when his program started going downhill, he would "get out and let some young guy do it." He said when a "pattern of losing" developed, it would be time for him to step down. After going 8-4 way back in 2001, Bobby cracked that if the Seminoles suffered another such subpar season, "It might be time for ol' Robert to step down."

That was about six subpar seasons ago and ol' Robert is still desperately hanging onto his job while Florida State's dysfunctional football program circles the drain. This, sadly, is what happens when you don't follow your own advice. There is a feeling among his wife and supporters that boosters like influential trustee Jim Smith are being disloyal for wanting Bowden to retire after this season. Bowden loyalists believe Bobby is owed a graceful and grand farewell by Florida State. I would agree - except for one small problem. It's hard to say farewell to somebody who just won't leave.

Let's face it, as great as Bobby has been and as much as he has meant to FSU, he has selfishly and stubbornly choreographed his own demise. The beginning of his downfall started nearly a decade ago; that's when Bobby's betrayal of Florida State began. That's when he wrongly put his son's career ahead of his program's success.

The year was 2000; the Seminoles were coming off their last appearance in a national championship game and their offense was ranked No. 1 in the nation. Mark Richt, the offensive coordinator, left to become the head coach at Georgia. Bobby could have had his choice of the most innovative offensive minds in college football. He instead hired his son Jeff as the new coordinator.

If ESPN picks him up as a college commentator and teams him with Holtz, there won't be enough room in the booth for both their egos.

ESPN is "appalled."

Seriously? WTF?

The same network that trots out an annual "Bowden's lost control of the program!" story, the same network that during broadcasts repeats ad nauseum how far we've fallen, the same network that ran on the front-page of its website a story about our fourth-string wide receiver missing a court date (to take a final exam)....

This same network is now appalled at the way Bobby was treated.

Fark you ESPN. Get back to gobbling USC's knob and let FSU rebuild. I think Jimbo's the right guy to do it.

Our offense is really, really good (before the Florida game at least, we led the nation in scoring against ranked teams).

Our defense, special teams, and overall morale are abysmal though.....

The sad thing is that the era ended in the late 90's. It's just been on life support from then on. Granted it's not exactly the way that he would want to go, but at this point, there aren't that many more coaches to fall on the sword for him.

Yeah. 1999. That was yesterday. What about the past 10 years? I think that qualifies as trashing the program. He took FSU to prominence and couldnt maintain. He has since brought them down to the basement of the ACC. And his lack of player control is just horrendous.

Well I have met Terry and he's a jerk. Keyword is "I" not my mother. He is a big talker, comes across nice...but total ass. Tommy is not far behind.

I completely lost respect for Terry when he left Auburn. He abandoned his pets because it was not convenient to take them with him. After about a week and a massive storm, he called the vet school and told us that he left his horses out in the pasture and was "concerned." When we got there, the horses were running and pacing like crazy and one had a couple of lacerations from the hail storm. We took in the horses and they were soon adopted. He could have and should have let us know before he left. Not that you knew all this about Terry, but hopefully you will see that my comment regarding the Bowdens was not without some first hand experience.

I don't care how "wonderful" you may be, abuse an animal (or a child) and you are the scum of the earth.

Not having Christian Ponder out there didn't help things.

That said, I don't see Bowden in anybody's booth anytime soon. I'm not certain he feels as strongly about the media after having been beaten up in it for the past few years. I think it's funny how ESPN is changing their tune on his treatment; they probably expect him to come calling soon.

I think he steps away for good. I just hope he survives not having anything to do anymore.

Earlier in the season, when the UCONN player got shot and killed, WVU fans went out of their way to be respectful of UCONN when they were at Mountaineer Field. Afterwards, though, when it was suggested by some local media that maybe the fans should try to carry that classy attitude to all games, the town pretty much exploded in aghast horror.
