Actually, the person she left the message for only offered to pay for the groceries, not both.

Still, if it's true, it's one of those nice gestures which remind you that there are good people in the world.

I'd of offered to buy her house and rent it back to her, then start eviction procedures for non-payment in 6 months.

/not really
/the dust must be catching..

Pocket Ninja [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 07:10:25 PM
She didn't pay for both, subby, she paid for the groceries. The caller paid her own mortgage.

And while this is a heart-warming story regardless that I'd like to believe, there's enough cynic in me to think netweavr called this one correctly. Especially once I found out the benefactor is a real estate agent.

But maybe it's true.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 07:10:27 PM
I don't think it's a scam now, but I'm sure some asshat will try it and some moran will fall for it.

what_now [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 09:00:03 PM
Her house is already in foreclosure. Her mother recently passed away, and Crutchfield is now trying to pay off her house. She had a money order prepared to make a mortgage payment on that house -- but was going to cash it in when her daughter called asking for money.

Ok, so the Crutchfield is the lady who called the wrong number. Her house has been foreclosed on and her late mother's house is about be foreclosed on. Her daughter can't feed her children.

Look, this is a nice story, and it makes me feel some warm fuzzies, but are we talking about three generations of fail here?

People whose mothers die are failing at life? The sucky economy is the fault of the Crutchfield family from San Diego?

I mean, what kind of person sees this as a glass half empty scenario?

No, but it sounds like GreatGrandmother's house was foreclosed on, grandma is in danger of losing her house, and mom needs help to feed the kids.

Look, maybe that's harsh, and I don't know these people, but it doesn't sound like one month of groceries is all they need to get back on their feet.

Scam or not, it was a really nice thing for the real estate agent to do. Props to her.

That is what Thanksgiving is all about....having enough to be thankful, and having a little extra to make someone else thankful. There are too many cynics on Fark and in the world. If this story is on the up and up, then there is some hope left in a crazy world. I spent Thanksgiving by myself, while the ex and the kids did it up at the ex-inlaws. I drove myself to a miserable holiday with bad decisions....but I am thankful there are people out there willing to do a little bit more to make up for my dumb ass.

nice story but isnt it like an internet-wide rule that all of these stories have some detail thats missing that totally spin the story in the opposite direction.

my money is on the theory that at least one of the houses in danger of foreclosure is actually a 300,000 dollar mansion that some dumbass banker mortgaged to applebees waitress with 3 kids.

though "eggs and milk" is a pretty humble request so maybe not...

Where I have been looking 300,000 barely gets you a single family dwelling with two baths and maybe a 150sq. meter yard.

I don't know if it's a scam, but there really are people this nice out there. When I was in grad school, my husband-to-be sent me money for rent. The check was lost in the mail for a couple of weeks, and I called the postmaster (it was a small town) to see if he could help track it. He couldn't, but he offered to loan me the money for rent. He didn't know me, but I found out later that my husband did know him, and he said that's just how nice the guy is.

There was also a mechanic in town who repaired the carburetor in my truck for $9 and fixed my heater for free because he noticed the fan wasn't working when he test drove it.

Sometimes the introduction is just some brassy voiced woman saying, "The person you are calling is not available", with way too much intonation, followed by 80 seconds of instructions in English and Spanish so as to nick the customer for more minutes.

You realize that when someone dies you still need to make the mortgage payment right? Sometimes you don't have all your ducks in a row and you're like whoa, I gotta make these payments because mom died now!

Uhh...err...did you catch that this story was in San Diego? Indeed, the poor do live in 300k places, and the houses at that price are far from being mansions.

Unfortunately, this is probably only delaying the inevitable... instead of losing the house this month, it will be next. Sad, but true.

legalkegel 2009-12-01 12:06:38 AM
I live in Vancouver, where a lower-mid level mortgage payment is going to set you back $2,000 to $2,500. Buying groceries is hardly the deal breaker on paying the damn bank.

awgsilyari 2009-12-01 12:08:44 AM
Why the hell would the mother mention to the daughter that she would be missing a house payment? There are only two explanations:

1. Mother is a complete biatch who gets off on guilt-tripping her family
2. Daughter is a serial mooch who can't get her shiat together

richmassena23 2009-12-01 12:10:06 AM
If this is a scam, it's the lamest scam in history. Otherwise, it's a really nice gesture, and while I doubt it makes a difference in the long run, it is this kind of selflessness that is the true meaning of Christmas.

Hmm, I am not sold on the whole deal but why wouldn't she mention it? Republicans always ask why family isn't taking care of those who are on the government dole.

Umm, don't most mortgages - in fact, all mortgages - require a life insurance component that covers the banks ass? Every mortgage I ever had did. The price was reasonable and I figured it was a good deal just to prevent that very thing from happening. But maybe it's not a bank requirement.
