...I would imagine the resulting fire would aslo result in warmth. Maybe not the desired amount of warmth, but not just pain...

Sweet "knob hill" apartments. Huh Huh, you said knob! (obligatory)

I bet they got the light they wanted, at least until the screams put the flames out.

Either they were heating it or it wasn't lamp oil, there's no way it should flash like that.

This is one of those situations where you just know they were SO sure this was a brilliant idea and only thinking of their own genius as they poured the oil into the pan.

At first I thought they were just using the saucepan as a fireproof receptacle and lighting it with matches/lighter. If they did in fact heat it over the stove in an attempt to ignite it, they really has the dumb.

if the fire got out of control i would have used my electric vacuum cleaner on the flames and liquid and just sucked it all up.

tinyarena: What part of "power outage" didn't you understand?

(ignoring the pun and the "whoosh"...)

"Power outage" doesn't necessarily mean loss of network connectivity. I have a laptop and I have my cable modem + wifi router plugged into a UPS, so I would have several hours of local connectivity in the event of a power outage (don't know if the cable company has backup power for their upstream equipment).

It's also possible to browse a text-only snapshot of Wikipedia on an offline reader (new window).

I'd like to respond but, if there's a pun burried in there somewhere...I just can't take that chance. Not now. Not again. You understand.
