Personally, I'd prefer the Colts end this season better than the Pats did that season.

Methinks he'll be singing a different tune if they are 16-0 at the end of the regular season.

What's the attraction if that "1" is a loss in the Super Bowl? If you run the table and lose that, it's the difference between being a legendary team and a footnote, but a Super Bowl win is still a Super Bowl win no matter how you got there. This isn't college football, so running the table doesn't get you anything. Nobody wants to be a footnote.

Very well said. The only time the undefeated season becomes truly legendary is when the exclamation point of the Super Bowl win is added. If they lose a game and win the Super Bowl, I don't really care. I think they can do it. Go Colts!

Colts need to go undefeated through the regular season so the Pats can end the Saints undefeated streak tonight, then end the Colts' in the playoffs. If the Pats win the superbowl after doing that, it would make that whole 18-1 thing a lot better to think about.

I that a different coach means a different outcome. However, I remember the last time we were in a position to end the regular season with a perfect record...resting the offense for the playoffs didn't quite pan-out the way Dungy had hoped.

Probably, but I just get tired of the "Can the Saints/Colts go undefeated?" nonsense. NOBODY CARES. At least, not since the Patriots fells short a couple of years ago.

No. That season will always live in infamy. Video cheat scandal followed immediately by the failed Superbowl/19-0.

I'm a Pats fan, and while it's great to say we have the only modern day undefeated regular season, it doesn't mean much of anything when we got flat out beaten up in the SB.
It's a nice to have done type of thing, but I'd rather have 1 regular season loss and yet another SB win by Tomgod.

I can't imagine my heartache if that Giants SB was the Pats only chance at winning a SB, and they blew it, that would suck. At least we'll always have 3 SB wins under Brady and a dynasty moniker to go along with the "best QB" discussion ever.

There are worse things.. hello Bills fans! Oh wait, hello state of Ohio..

Fortunately, we'll always have 3 SB wins under Brady Al Davis

No heartache here at all..
Fantastic unsubstantiated claims that ended with.. what exactly? Taping? the same thing other coaches said that they did? No heartache at all.. none.

Dr.Knockboots: Fantastic unsubstantiated claims that ended with.. what exactly?

Factual and substantiated. Here's what:

NFL fines Belichick, strips Patriots of draft pick (new window)

"New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for spying on an opponent's defensive signals... The commissioner also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice "

Did they all say that? All of them? Nope, I think most of them said it was bullshiat and the Patriots are dirty cheaters. They weren't taping the same things other coaches taped, that's why they were punished (even if the punishment was a slap on the wrist). If you could cheat your way to 3 SB's like the Patriots did, you'd gladly give up 750K and a late 1st rounder.

Open question: given the Titans sudden resurgence, and Indy's offensive troubles over the last several weeks, the 4th quarter of this week an exception, how likely is it that the Titans knock off Indy?

The Vikings are currently the best team in the NFC. The conference game will be Vikings vs. Saints and i trust that a healthy Purple Jesus will seek revenge against Breezus. The playoffs this year are looking to be the spiciest in years.

yequalsy 2009-11-30 02:45:20 PM
10-6 & SB champs > 16-0 & SB losers, any day. Furthermore, if going 16-0 means I decrease my chances of winning the SB by an epsilon (e.g., playing my stars deep into games 15 and 16) then fark the 16-0.

That works out for the Colts. Between the Saints and Vikings though home dome advantage in the playoffs could easily come down to winning out.

I don't see how everyone is assuming that the Colts are going to win the AFC Championship. I see a few teams in the AFC that they should fear.

As a Colts fan I will say that it's very possible that the Titans could win this weekend. Indy has clinched the AFC South and have a 3 game lead on everyone else for home field advantage vs. the Titans who need to win out to have any chance at the playoffs. That equals a very scary game. Not saying they will lose, but it is a possibility.

whizbangthedirtfarmer 2009-11-30 03:03:52 PM
Thankfully, as a Seahawks fan, I never have to worry about such issues as "undefeated" and "playoffs." I only think about draft choices and how to spend them on players who will never live up to the billing.

/Maybe Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow this year!

BunkoSquad 2009-11-30 03:05:29 PM
As a Pats fan, if they can't win it all, I hope it's the 18-0 Colts versus the 18-0 Saints in the Super Bowl, just for the comedic value of 2 weeks' worth of interviews with the '72 Dolphins who will know that they're doomed no matter what happens.

jazzi-e 2009-11-30 03:06:05 PM
Lame! They are 20 - 0 if you don't count them getting knocked out of the playoffs last year. Seriously? What a stupid record. Next year you can say the Colts are trying for their 26th win in a row but they did get spanked again in the playoffs. GAY!

The one thing you should know though, is that the Colts have had a history of taking it easy at the end of the regular season, only to lose early in the playoffs. I don't know how much Peyton wants that to happen again.

And no matter what they say, they want to go 16-0.

Heres something to discuss. When this season is all said and done. Lets say Colts do run the table and go undefeated. How much credit does Caldwell get? how much does he deserve? He was basically handed the keys to a incredible machine, however, you absolutely cannot overlook the tremendous amount of issues the Colts have overcome. Losing key members of the defense and still winning is incredible. In fact, Id say what hes done defensively has been pretty outstanding. Granted, his offense certainly can keep them in any game. But still, theyve overcome a lot. Losing Gonzalez might have been a factor on most teams, but since that injury, Peyton has turned relative nobodies into premier Wide recievers. When its all said and done, no one thought the Colts were capable of this at the start of the season. And theyve, week in and week out, gotten it done. Since my Jets are all but grounded, ill put my support firmly behind the rookie head coach, whose quietly achieving history.

Here's the AFC playoffs.

Wildcard Denver v. San Diego - winner San Diego
Next Round San Diego v. Indy - winner Indy.
AFC championship game New England v. 5 guys from Indy and 48 guys pulled up from the CFL to fill in the holes left by injuries after playing San Diego in the playoffs - winner New England.

The Hammer Is My Penis 2009-11-30 03:16:12 PM
The Pats 16-0 season was the least fun I've ever had watching football. The Titans are the last team the Colts play with much of a shot (unless Denver wakes back up), so this is the last chance they have to let one slip.

That said, 16-1 would be pure Manning.

About as much credit as Bill Callahan gets for taking the Raiders to the Super Bowl.

In other words, next to none. That was Gruden's team. This is Peyton's team.

This is an odd statement from the Colts fan... I don't want to see the Colts have a perfect season ... yet.

Imagine dating Jessica Alba when you're a freshman in high school. You break up as sophomores and then every woman you date from thereon out would be a step downward. Jessica Alba needs to be the last woman in a long line of ascendingly hot girls. It's too early for Manning and the Colts to peak at perfection. If I were writing a book, I'd have Manning go a perfect season on his last year before retirement.
