If my wife is any indication, I'd have to say this is completely true.

In any given situation, my wife's first reaction is to panic. Mine is to rationally determine the best course of action to solve whatever problem arises...

I've always thought that was just normal. Can't believe they had to do a study to figure that out.

To clear the headline up -

In Phantom of the Opera , Christine is repeatedly kidnapped by the Phantom. It gets to the point where he lets her go under the provision that she return when he asks. She had many opportunities to rescue herself; in fact, in one scene, she prevents her boyfriend, Raoul, from killing the Phantom. During all this, she has a look of utmost pity on her face. Basically, she was reacting emotionally to this creepy, deranged and deformed pedophile (the actress, at least, was 16 at the time of filming) rather than looking out for her own safety.

For reference, take a look at this Youtube clip (new window). She is fairly certain that the Phantom will appear and attempt to kidnap her, but at no time does she alert the audience or other cast members that the Phantom is present.

Or perhaps I'm over-analyzing subby's headline. It's a Monday after a long holiday weekend (with a nice 800 mile drive) and the caffeine hasn't kicked in yet.

Same here. Unfortunately, living on a dangerous stretch of road, I usually can show that off a few times a year. It helps the victims, too - they're not as worked up when everyone is calm and not panicking along with them.

This. Men are more likely to flee immediately as well, since their fight-or-flight response is triggered more quickly. They'll either jump right in or recoil.

The brain scans don't suggest that women would react illogically to danger. In fact, one interesting outcome of this MIGHT be that women react more logically because they have more time to think before the adrenaline rush. (I don't know if that would actually be the case, but it would make for an interesting study.)

This presupposes that taking the time to think won't result in death.

Depends entirely on the danger, I suspect. I'd also wager that in some situations of social danger a detachment from the emotions of the situation could be a benefit.

Wow, why are so many people not getting the headline? It is simple and funny to me. (Not the subby, btw.) It is mostly a play on the word "shows", which in this case can be read as either a verb or a noun because of the way the headline was phrased and punctuated.

Verb: The brain scan shows us the difference.
Noun: We are going to NY to see the Broadway shows, the off-Broadway shows, and the brain scan shows.

Pretty cleverly done, actually. The rest of the headline is a jab at ALW, whose music is almost universally and simultaneously detested by men and adored by women.

I got it with no problems, subbs. +1
