Why Moller isn't in jail long since for stock fraud it beyond me.

Whoever would want to fly that thing would have to have balls of steel, I'd say.

I would think that balls of steel would increase the total weight of the vehicle making it less safe. If given the choice, I'd take the guy with balls of helium to fly it.

The thing is: now that small computers have finally caught up to his 'vision'
of using flocking algorithms to allow for semi-autonomous operations it is
even more practical on paper than it ever had been in the past. But, the
only thing remotely resembling a physical test he's ever done was with
that electrical-fan saucer mock up, which used mains power. Short of
someone finally coming up with a Mr. Fusion generator, it'll never have an
engine big enough to lift it with sheer thrust.

Moller is only a small cut above the Balloon Dad in the final analysis.

All this time and money... The only thing that needs to happen is for Dante to whack off his food and let Dr Moller "diddle" him a little.

Not to mention that maintenance requirements on those turbines means taking the damn thing to the shop every week or so.

/Chinese Democracy preloaded on the docked iPod sound system, too.

I read about the Moller VTOL skycar when I was a teenager. It was just year or two away.

I turned 43 last week.

I think Balloon Dad is his number 2.

And like Duke Nukem, I assume the skycar will be constantly delayed for the next 10+ years??

Come to think of it why don't we have one person dirigibles? I wouldn't mind having a dirigible.

I saw it on TV so it must be real

Yeah, I especially like the obvious shopping cart wheel they used for the front landing gear.

schattenteufel: It looks like it would be fun to fly:

Just looking at the thing should be obvious that it's a scam. It's meant to *look* like a flying car, not *be* one. The thing has no wings, which means the ducted fans will always be facing downwards, right? Now look at the aerodynamics of the joints leading to the fans.

The vehicle is designed to have a smooth profile when the fans point forwards... which will only happen when it isn't flying.

Agreed,If heavy enough, and mounted low on some sort of free swinging gimble ,Balls of steel would provide stability to the craft, much as ballast is to a sailboat.Whereas Boobs of steel would create a topheavy unstable situation, neccesitation the need for a much much hotter engine and a rear end designed to handle the oscillations...

For once, I'm glad my mumbled 'I'm going to regret this' was unfounded.

What I find incredible is investors keep giving him money. This guy is a fraud. His intentions may have been genuine at the beginning but anymore I'm fairly sure he's just milking folks out of money as long as he can. The only thing he's ever made that is worth a damn is the Supertrapp muffler other then that all he's ever produced has been invisible snake oil.

Hell yes, I'd buy me a dirigible.

Then I would grow a long, thin mustache, wear a cape, and float over the park going "nya ha ha haaa!" and tossing water balloons at people.

It will be awesome

Not much good when you want to nip out for a newspaper or bottle of milk though is it. I also can't see my granny getting along very well with the controls.

It's actually whom 2009-11-30 11:41:01 AM
I became disillusioned with TED when Mr. Moller was invited to give a talk there...and it was pretty much a big awful commercial with some tired "money for nothing" style computer graphics.

Now he's making Almond butter and getting into alternative medicine.

Even if we could have the flying car, I wouldn't want one. I have enough trouble surviving the parking lot at Best Buy with soccer moms on cell phones. I don't need to dodge cars falling from the sky.

I want my own flying car, but I want to be the only one around here. I've seen way too many fools who need training wheels on their cars. Between the texting teens, the coffee slurping moms, and the permanently stuck on left turn signals, I would never leave the house if everybody could achieve lift off.

This. Most people are too stupid to operate a normal car safely. What makes anyone think they could handle one that can fly?

To date, Terrafugia remains privately funded by a sophisticated group of accredited individual investors. The company is based just outside of Boston in Woburn, Massachusetts, USA. - from site.

DjangoStonereaver: Why Moller isn't in jail long since for stock fraud it beyond me.

Have they ever outright lied, or are they just overly optimistic?

Besides, anybody willing to invest in a completely new and untested technology is either a greedy idiot who deserves to lose their shirt or is someone who's willing and able to accept the risk, given the potential gain. Tough luck to the former and good luck to the latter.

Hopefully before flying cars become the norm, networked traffic will be implemented; where 3rd party traffic computers remote-control you to your destination & the driver/passengers have little control over the vehicle.

Slaves2Darkness 2009-11-30 12:00:26 PM
Flying car, bah! I just want a dam car that can auto pilot itself where ever I need to go.

0Icky0 2009-11-30 12:00:50 PM
How is that any better than all the small airplanes that are actually being flown?

VTOL? Small helicopters can do that already.

But if it's put together with Monster Cables, I'm in.

Hopefully? Automation almost never precedes inovation. The inovation must first work manually and be successful before someone will spend money on automating that inovation.
