Was it limited to hockey? I would have bid to make him a NJ Nets fan. Because I'm an asshole.

Does this guy know that the Sabres are doing well this year and we're only 50 minutes away?

Misch [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 09:38:26 AM
The winning bidder was Chris Dawson, an Alberta native who chose to root for the Dallas Stars

And it went for CDN$25.

First those Canadians undercut us on the Silverdome and now this?

We coulda got a least 600K!

I would have had him root for the Browns. The more of us who suffer the better.

I don't care how bad the Leafs get. They could go 0-82 for a decade straight, get outscored 6286-3 during that span and trade away every first, second and third round draft pick from now until 2054, I still wouldn't even entertain the thought of cheering for the Sabres.

Never.

Ever.

Sports teams loyalty is already completely arbitrary anyways...

I never understood why people cheer for teams simply because they happen to be owned close to them, regardless of how that team plays, or where the players on that team come from.

Wasn't there a similar article about a Redskins fan doing this a while back?

I would have paid $25 to see him become a Sens fan.

Has it really gotten to the point that Leafs fans have been backing a loser for so long that they have to be shown a real winner?

JagJSUT 2009-11-30 11:59:56 AM
I would've paid more than $25 to make that Leafs fan cheer for the Nashville Predators. The joy that I would receive would have been spectacular.

AnEvilGuest 2009-11-30 12:03:18 PM
As a leaf fan, with some personal experience of how effective that cheering has been the last 40 years, my approach would be more akin to extortion.

Pay me or I'll cheer for your favorite team. (then the evil laugh)

desertgeek 2009-11-30 12:24:49 PM
Man, I would've paid him $100 to be a Coyotes fan, plus the amount for a lesson on how to slash people.

/because being a Coyotes fan up there could result in canuck-on-canuck violence

Some clown did this with his Cubs fandom after one of their first round flameouts. I think it was 2008. eBay ended the sale since he wasn't selling anything tangible. Anyone who does this is a loser and should not be paid anything for trying to draw attention to themselves.

If you hate your team so much, pick another one. I considered giving up the Bengals and going with the nearby Colts after the 2002 season. Things are going well now, but it doesn't change the fact that it is one of the poorest run teams in all of sports.

Because in here St. Louis, you cheer for, and love the Cardinals. End of story. There really isn't any other option here, unless you're a Chicago transplant that very publicly loves the Cubs just to piss people off.

Here, it's not really about that fact that they're just "here" and we cheer for 'em cuz it's STL. It's about being one of the oldest teams in baseball with one of the winningest and richest histories in the league. This city truly loves its team; the fans are knowlegeable and passionate, and the thought of the Cards being anywhere else is outside the realm of possibility.

We don't "like" or "follow" the Cards because they're here. We do because from March to October, The Cards and STL are synonymous.

Eh, it's not so bad over here.

Unlike some nearby teams, we've at least managed to make the Cup Final a couple times in the last four decades.

On a related note, Sabres vs. Leafs tonight. Here's hoping Buffalo can extend their winning streak to three and retake their rightful spot atop the Northeast division.

GO SABRES!

Also, the Bills' win over Miami yesterday was nice. Ultimately pointless in regards to the rest of the season unless the rest of the AFC East collapses, but nice.

Sabres v Leafs tonight.
Blow, Leafs, blow.
Let's go, Buffalo.

(Cool story, bro! follows.)

I'm a Rangers fan by birth. My Dad was a Rangers fan, but I never really caught onto hockey until I was 13 and in Toronto on a family vacation. We were there just in time to see the Leafs get to the second round of the playoffs, and seeing the hockey goons in the middle of Toronto will be something I'll never forget. Cars going down the main drag with big-ass Leafs flags on both sides, people gathering 6-7 deep around any TV they could find during the game, it was wonderful. I saw it again with my Dad when the Rangers won the Cup that next year, then 2 year after that I went to my first NHL game in MSG.

Being born in Cleveland, I can see where this guy is coming from (I swore off all Cleveland sports by my 17th birthday) but I just can't see ever giving up New York.

It gets in your blood.

My first exposure to hockey was, oddly enough, at the '97 National Jamboree. I'd never so much as turned on a game, but when they did the state roll call for Pennsylvania, every member of the Michigan contingent started chanting "Let's go Red Wings!". I asked a friend, he said they'd just beaten Philly for the Stanley Cup. Interesting, I thought, but our crappy cable didn't carry hockey, and I didn't at the time understand the game enough to watch.

Then I met my wife, and things got better. She loves the Wings, and had a cable package with the Wings' home feed. We started watching games, I learned the game, and then she got front-row tickets for Wings-Blackhawks. Hook was set, and I've been a diehard fan ever since.

can't give up the devils. ever. something about going to that first game at ,then, brendan byrne arena in the early 90s as the devils got absolutely destroyed by the florida panthers. Highlight of the game...an usher was absolutely blasted in the leg by a puck that was deflected up over the glass. He winced and popped back up. He got a standing ovation for being more tough than the team on the ice that day.

oh winning 3 cups doesnt hurt, being the scourge of ranger and flyer fans doesnt hurt, and having a lot of the NHL fan base hate you for winning those cups based on the trap and mind bending insane goal tending doesnt hurt.

Also..devils fans have a soft spot for dudes who are either dirty players (claude lemieux) and heavy hitters (scott stevens)

LETS GO DEVILS!

When you grow up around a sports club and have ease of access to games, merchandise and fans there is a high probability that you will also grow up to be a fan. I know, this is maddening!

// Canucks fan
// Live in Ireland now..games are on so late..

For the record, i'm the biggest MMA fan alive... i like fighters because of how they fight, not where they come from.

People who cheer for teams simply due to their ownership location are the ignorant ones.

Well, that depends on whether you view last year as a fluke or not. Given that the Bruins have pretty much the same lineup as last year (except Kessel), if last season wasn't a "lightning in a bottle" kind of deal... watch out.

You forgot the part where they beat the top team in the East and lit up Vokoun and Nittymaki(who were 1-2 in the save percentage and top 10 in GAA at the time) in consecutive games. Am I saying they're great? No, just pointing out how the last two weeks have seen a definate improvement.
