PC LOAD LETTER [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 07:56:34 AM
Obama gets credit for getting Pakistan to move their ass after a decade trying to get them to do this.

KyngNothing [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 08:56:36 AM
Pakistan's forces have killed 600 fighters, at least 7 percent of the nation's main Taliban force, in a six-week-old offensive in South Waziristan, military spokesman Athar Abbas said.

Ok, so there's only 8500 'terrorists' left. We're killing 100 a week...

Assuming it trails off a bit towards the end, in two years we'll have killed every terrorist, and there will be peace in the region!

KyngNothing [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 08:57:31 AM
I'm surprised they started an offensive this late in the season... I'd guess in a week or two they'll declare winter victory and go home...

I_C_Weener [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 09:33:35 AM
"Trust them, they were definitely terrorists...or just a random number we've come up with to impress our new American friends. Anyone care for slightly bullet riddled barbecued goat?"

During the Vietnam "Conflict", injuries and fatalities on both sides were published in the papers. Even as teenager, I knew they were propaganda; day after day you would see something like this:

National Liberation Front (Vietcong)
Injured: 20,000
Dead: 4,000

USA
Injured: 6
Dead: 1

Well, since we ended up killing about a million Vietnamese and lost about 58,000 Americans that sounds about right.

Whoever's being killed they're not terrorists. If they're fighting a military then they're either an opposing military or a guerrilla force. Terrorists target civilian populations.

With the amount of aid we've been pumping into Pakistan, that means each of these randomly chosen petty crim--TERRORISTS!!1! cost us about $400,000 to have killed.

What a bargain!

Assuming you mean Vietnamese from the North. It's closer to 3 or 4 million Vietnamese from both sides. And another 1.2 million other causalities from surrounding countries.

The word "terrorists" is scary. "Terrorising" is not much of a help either. I hope our government will do something to stop this menace. We share only one planet, btw.

make me some tea [TotalFark] 2009-11-30 10:10:15 AM
The government says the Mehsud tribal faction comprises 5,000 to 8,000 guerrillas and sponsors 80 percent of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. Seventy soldiers have died in the campaign, Abbas said. The area is closed to reporters and casualty figures have been impossible to verify.

My propaganda meter just asploded.

Hey, a BS twofer! Your troll fu is strong.

No spitting incidents have ever been documented in '70s news reports, and even if any did occur, it would have been radical leftists, not Democrats, doing the spitting. And Nixon did exactly as Walter Cronkite advised: negotiated a "peace with honor" withdrawal after a ceasefire. It's not our fault the South Vietnamese government was so incompetent/corrupt that they couldn't beat a smaller, less well-equipped North Vietnamese army two years after we left.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaha, oh, so much bullshiat. Guys, come on. The Pakistani body counts are utterly insane. Let me share a cool story, bro.

I was deployed for my second go-round to FOB Tillman in Afghanistan, right on the Pak border IN Waziristan. We had OPs that could observe their corresponding Pak border checkpoints with thermal imaging. When I say "observe" I mean we could clearly see exactly what everyone was up to. We would ROUTINELY see groups of fighters leave the Lwara bazaar, walk to the Pak checkpoint, say hullo, and then cut the fence and walk across the border to try to emplace IEDs or rockets. We would pummel them with fire missions (FA all the way!) and they would scatter and retreat, medevacing their wounded right back to the Pak border checkpoint. We would call the Pakis on the land line and ask wtf they were doing, and they would deny ever having seen any fighters. Once, one told us when caught in a lie "well, that's just like...your opinion, man." Straight out of Lebowski. It got A LITTLE better with a new Pak border commander, but only in the sense that they would usually avoid the enemy instead of outright aiding them.

Don't believe the bullshiat. I'm not saying there isn't an offensive, or that the Pakis might finally be trying to get a little more serious. But when you hear "600 fighters OMGZ!" you should think "thirty-four fighters, three abandoned trucks, some women and kids, and a goat."

Why? It seems fairly clear-cut to me...suddenly there's a giant surge of efficiency from Pakistani troops on the remote border, most of whom are directly related to the fighters they're trying to kill? The problem with the whole "Waziristan" thing is that the local tribal infrastructure is FAR more important to people from the area than some far off government in Islamabad or Kabul. I find it very, very hard to believe that suddenly people are willing to give up their brothers and cousins as fighters to an efficient and effective Pakistani military. Yeah. If THAT seems more likely to you than Pakmil helping the Taliban, you need to read up on the border.

Nobody should doubt Pakistan's sincerity in the fight against terrorism, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said, according to the official Associated Press of Pakistan.

Of course not. Now, about the LeT... or are we still blaming Bangladesh and "lack of information"?

Let's take those numbers, divide them by three, and we'll see a more accurate result of their operations.

Until they start collecting the left hands of the dead terrorists to show the world, their claims should be taken with a grain of salt.
