They're a subspecies of chimpanzee that are very sexual amongst themselves. There's almost no violence in their society, by contrast (regular chimps are actually quite violent).

Bonobos, or "hippy chimps" are well known in anthropological circles for doing things like deciding who's the winner of a fight by having sex. They're also known for greeting rival groups of bonobos with genital handshakes and "sensual body rubs".

Some researchers wishing to justify their own sexual practices like to use them as an example of the "fact" that mankind isn't alone in practicing sodomy or oral sex, and in fact they claim sometimes that bonobos practice all the same things, from group sex to pedophilia. This is their "proof" that society should just relax and not get all bent out of shape about things like eg. same sex marriages because they're natural behavior.

Me, I'm not gonna believe that these animals perform all the same sex acts as humans until I'm shown a film of them felching.

Their methods of greeting each other sure beat the hell out of the whole dogs-sniffing-butts thing, though.

Unless you count as "violent" the killing of small animals for food and the occasional rival bonobo (also for food) when the opportunity arises.

Well more or less... I was going to go heavier on the dog/butt sniffing thing though.

I don't enjoy pictures of primates in captivity, as a rule. Too much hopelessness in their eyes.

A mother primate with a shiny new baby is almost more heartbreaking. She knows she's in a prison, and that it's a life sentence. The joy she finds in her newborn is bittersweet: her child's life will also be in prison, however humane that place might be (or not be).

I probably need to toughen up a bit.
