Yet another accidental shooting.

Two men have been injured after being shot while out hunting geese. The men, both 57, were part of an unorganised group who were shooting the birds on farmland in Dunning, Perthshire.

Dick pointed his gun at somebodys face and consciously pulled the trigger, which is fail.

Two people shot in the legs suggests a ricochet from a shotgun pointed in a somewhat safe direction. I would probably blame trigger discipline, but considering the relics that probably pass as hunting shotguns in the UK, I would not rule out the failure of the sear on an external hammer.

The difference between a hunting accident and fail.

Yes. Animals such as big cats, bears, sharks, and other predators have eaten us and our ancestors for millions upon millions of years.

We've even eaten each other, sometimes ceremonially, sometimes out of madness, and sometimes because there weren't any other food sources available.

So, yes, people=food, even though we don't normally like to think of ourselves that way.

Someone who eats meat and/or wears leather and fur, but who wishes malice towards hunters, is a hypocrite.

Someone who doesn't eat meat yet denigrates hunters, while being logically consistent, is actively going against human evolution by not eating meat or other animal protein.

Fair enough. I just don't understand why people are shocked when they get shot on an "organized" hunting trip. Y'know, a buncha people running around the woods with guns seems like one of the absolute most likely places to get shot. ...Or hit by a ricochet or whatever.

Actually, it isn't.

I've been hunting for 30 years now. I know a lot of hunters. The hunters that I know know a lot of hunters. Yet none of us have ever heard of someone we know getting shot while out hunting.

Obviously, it does happen. But it's such a rare event that it's almost nonexistent. In New York State, there were 39 fatal hunting accidents involving firearms between 1989 and 1995, or about 6.5 a year. That works out to a rate of .78 fatalities per 100,000 hunters.

On the other hand, the rate of fatal vehicle accidents in New York State is 10 times higher, at 7.82 per 100,000 (1,558 fatalities in 2006). It's actually likely to be higher, though, because that rate is per 100,000 population, not 100,000 drivers.

It's extremely rare. You are more likely to get killed driving to your hunting spot than you are to get killed by a fellow hunter.
