Reminds me of a REALLY old headline that was something along the lines of "What's black and white and red all over?" click link: Worker dies in printing press. Tragedy, but the headlines together were comedy gold.

Oh, I know people use the word cannons, and it has become common usage and thereby acceptable. That doesn't make it right.

Despite the fact that I'm on the losing side of an unwinnable argument, I take solace in the fact that this thread has become a grammar nazi haven. My English degree doesn't provide me the same comfort when I'm standing in front of the fryer.

Even so, cannons is only a word because the improper use was propagated and commonized into an acceptable form.

That's exactly my point- nobody even knows that what the correct usage is anymore, because they're never taught what "right" is from the beginning. Thus, the "wrong" usage becomes the "right" one; if the majority uses it the wrong way, it's not wrong anymore.

"Cannon" as plural just plain sounds wrong and can lead to confusion.

"Fire the cannon!"

"One? All of them? I'M SO CONFUSED!"

During the siege of a castle, defensive cannon were few and far between, so I suspect that when a cannonneer and his crew were ordered to fire, there wasn't much confusion about what to do.

On the high seas, once engaged in a broadside battle, you'd generally want to be firing them all, and as often as possible once in range, so again, I doubt much confusion would arise here as well.

Sorry for crapping on your joke, but I feel compelled, as the official antagonist of this thread.

I know they do, and I don't have an issue with it- it's when improper use gets defended erroneously out of a lack of knowledge for the history of proper usage of a word that my panties get in a wad.

Granted, this is rare- I'm actively racking my brain for a similar example of a slight shift in spelling that comes from the difference between the singular/plural usage of a word- best I can do is look at livestock manifests from the 1600s in England when illiterate peasants would write that they "hafe ten sheaps". (I'd link, but it's through a subscription required university library website).

As my greatest English teacher told me: Scholars do not shape or change a language, they just document the changes that occur- the peasants do all the real work.

It would be "Fire the cannon!", and your gunners would fire them all.

And I'm not thinking "canon", this distinction has already been made in snarky fashion in this thread by JohnnyBGoode, which drew a snert from me.

The only thing I've been intentionally obtuse about is being a fry-cook, adhering to the Fark-ism of "English Degree= fast food employee"

I'm not trolling- I've not called anyone any names, and I've ceded to the points that others have made in the thread. Describe what elements of my discourse in this thread have been "troll-like" and I'll acknowledge them. I generally think that "trolling" on online forums and message boards falls under the description of "Deliberately antagonizing anonymous people anonymously for the purposes of amusing oneself by reveling in their irritation and anger your comments and actions have engendered."

I didn't pull that definition from anywhere, by the by- it's just how I see it. I'm not deliberately trying to piss anyone off- I'm calmly and rationally arguing for the points I've made in the thread.

Pretty sure the plural of troll is trolls.

I quite think it was a rather civilized disagreement about a word. But we are on the internet, and that means one of us must be a troll.

Nothing is proper or improper in language provided the meaning is communicated. "Cannons" is quite proper because we all understand easily we are referring to more than one cannon.
