Well all I can say is thank God our tax money is going to vaccinate these priority people. Yessiree indeed.

Shouldn't the guy in the article qualify as a risk group? My father qualified because of diabetes, I figured most people with chronic illnesses should qualify. Just give it out already, or ship them to some place that didn't get enough for their risk groups. Iowa City, a college town, didn't get any at all, despite dorms being typical disease incubators. Had to go to Ill. just to get a damn shot.

The risk groups for Swine Flu are different than for the "normal" flu. Prevention suggestions are the same though.

In our town, the health department, through the school system, opened up registration for children and adults who meet the extra criteria (parent of an infant etc). With asthma I fell into the category and registered when I registered our children. We get to the school and I'm told that the vaccine is for children only. No problem.

As it was the mist vaccine the health department told me to check the school's website for when the 2nd dose would be administered. When I checked the site a week later I saw a note for the next round of shots for people who missed the first round. At the end was a note scolding those who registered but didn't come for the shot last time. Well gee, if you let people register and then tell them no, you can't get the shot, what do you expect?

FTFA: Many seniors have called the Review-Journal to complain. Some refrain from giving their names because they fear their complaints could cause their Social Security benefits to be cut off.

A good number of those who are uptight about this are apparently also a bit paranoid.

liquid_love 2009-11-29 02:19:27 PM
I understand that they need to prioritize and all that because of the limited supply. But by God there had better not be a supply room somewhere with a shelf full of that shiat just collecting dust. I'm fairly certain that these shelves exist everywhere. I just don't understand the thought processes at work here. Why does everybody insist on giving idiots the power to make the important decisions? What is it about human nature that makes us want to throw roadblocks in front of any sort of common sense or efficiency? I struggle to understand this every day, but have yet to come up with a satisfactory answer. This planet is doomed. And we deserve it.

College towns are given the same guidelines as other towns. Yeah, young people are most likely to get it, but it's just shiatty, not actually dangerous unless you have the other risk factors mentioned.

Our school didn't get any, and they bussed staff and students who were pregnant or had other risk factors to the nearest city to be vaccinated. They also have a massive quarantine in place-- students who are infected are only allowed to use one labeled shower, sink, and toilet in the dorms, can't leave their dorm rooms, and have their food brought to them by their RA. When they do have to go out they have to wear a mask. Thankfully I'm off campus and can stay home-- only went in once with a FLI and wore a mask and used a lot of hand sanitizer.

They should just give everyone placebos and be done with it. Being sick is all psychological anyways. If there is a true killer virus out there, it is like god's way of thinning the herd.

One: In the case of somebody with a compromised immune system, it's far more likely that you'll catch it regardless of age, and if you do, for it to be a death sentence. Two: guy in the article would like a medication that may well be vital to keeping him alive. That's being a douche in your eyes?

The reason we're in this mess is because the FDA caved in to the idiots who are afraid of thimerosal. They're producing less vaccine in multidose vials and instead opted for single-dose syringes. That's one cause of the production problems.

I do think anyone with chronic conditions, regardless of age, should be the defining factor. If your doc says you'll likely die without one, you ought to be able to get it. But there is nothing in TFA saying the vaccine doses will spoil or ultimately go unused. Submitter is using weasel language.

Anyway, since it's only as dangerous and contagious as 'regular' flu I'm so glad tax dollars are going to this. We don't have a "public option" or public health care with complimentary private insurance.
