(Globe and Mail) Obvious Canadian army commissions new uniforms so they can better fight in Canadian cities, although some don't see the point: "I have some trouble conceptualizing what a land war fought in Vancouver would be like. Relaxed, I guess"   (theglobeandmail.com) divider line 102

The new MARPAT pattern the marines have been wearing was developed and deployed in Canada first as CADPAT. Cool pattern as I remember wasps flying into me not knowing I was there when in the field. It works really well. What is wrong with developing an urban version?

The Canadian armed forces are actually pretty good, they just don't have much in the way of resources or people.

...Why would they need to be able to fight better in Canada? Who is going to invade? I doubt they'd even need help from the United States beyond the 'Mind dropping a few bombs out of planes for us?' type.

New Age Redneck 2009-11-29 01:05:29 PM
Yeah, I could just see a war in Vancouver...the soldiers would raid Emery's headquarters, get real f*cking high and hit the Cecil. War over.

I agree. The US (and England for that matter) would certainly intervene should anyone attempt such a silly endeavor. The biggest threat to Canada's security is probably Quebec, and they are French ... so a few choice words spoken authoritatively in German should put an end to that.

randomjsa: Why would they need to be able to fight better in Canada?

The primary job of any armed forces is defense of the homeland. You can't predict what's going to happen. There are some surprisingly large and well-armed groups all over the country that don't respect the rule of law. Most don't see themselves as part of Canada. Eventually, one of them may need to be dealt with.

"Ottawa is not included in the study because it does not rate as a "major metropolitan centre." (Besides, it appears that military personnel wouldn't face any particularly well-organized opposition there anyway.)"

That article is full of fun quotes!

Our army can win any war fought in Canada by handing out guns to all the Canadians.

If not, well, I'm raiding Canadian Tire and taking one of their rifles.

Except if anyone was going to invade Canada, it would BE the US.

I can't say that I'd see the point though. What does Canada have that's worth invading for? Maple syrup? Your burgeoning baby-seal-clubbing industry? Bagged milk? The chance to exterminate the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Canada has something worth invading for now - the oil sands. Alberta is going to look mighty tempting to the USA in a decade or two. If I was Canada I would get me some nukes. Seriously.

Fresh water? I'd say the oil sands, but that's only if the price skyrockets again.

Although I think if the US started trying to pull water out of the Great Lakes basin, most of us in the region would side with Canada. IIRC, that was about the only thread I ever agreed with MI Guy. Like, ever.

I love the Canadian politeness cliche.

I went to the Canucks/Oilers game last night and sat up in the nose bleeds with the drunken rowdies. There are railings in front of every seat, at perfect elbow-resting height. On the railing it says, "Be respectful of the fan in the seat below, please do not lean on the railing".

Through 3 hours of hockey, with thousands of people getting more and more drunk and uninhibited, not one person was leaning on the railing.

I mean hey, they asked us politely not to.

I love being Canadian.

I love it. I've been to plenty of hockey games at Rexall, and I've had similar experiences in the bowl seating areas.

In the last two years, delegations from California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah have met with our finest provincial reps across the street from my office over at Government House. One of my friends over there described some of the meetings escalating into shouting matches.

no shiat, they are probably miffed at how we could want to, you know, keep our fresh water for ourselves instead of wasting it on their Vegas water fountains and mormon conventions.

But, yeah, there's a lot of potential for conflict there. Not having water means life or death for their communities, therefore, no taxpayer dollars to pimp their shiat out.

Um, Canada provides a huge chunk of America's natural gas. America could save anywhere from $8-17B a year (in gas alone!) by occupying Canada and converting them all to Southern Baptists. Once the provinces become new states and the flag is altered, we can then begin the process of dismantling their health care system, dumbing down their education system and forcing the populace to accept Republican Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

As far as camouflage goes, a hoodie and slightly faded jeans is all you need. For summer warfare instead of the hoodie, a jersey for the closest CFL team to the battleground.

What would they want? Probably our massive amount of natural resources, specifically fresh water and of course oil, they'll invade any country if it's for oil.

I don't really think the American public has a stomach for an extended war anyhow. Yes, our armed forces are miniscule in comparison to those of the States, but I imagine every son-of-a-biatch would be out there planting IEDs or ambushing convoys. Americans underestimate our grit. I mean, we live in CANADA, for chrissakes. It gets damn cold here 6 months of the year (except where I am, heh, can't complain).

Besides, the way the Americans are spending money right now for the sake of wasting money, I imagine that they'll be broke in ten years and their vast military machine will be whittled down significantly.

I just hope that when America goes broke, China goes broke too, preventing them from being a problem. I don't want to live in China. I spent a month there and those people don't even have adequate sewer systems (you put your tissue, if there is any, in the wastebasket).
