There needs to be two different words for webcomics that tell stories and webcomics without real continuity that tell jokes. Outside of the internet, they are refered to as graphic novels and cartoons respectively, but they get lumped together as webcomics just because they're both published online with a semi-regular schedule. I was going to complain about this list, but then realized that it focused much more on the first type. If these words already exist (and don't sound retarded) could someone let me know what I should be calling things?

/This list still blows a lot.
//Tries too hard to not list the more popular webcomics.

no lowbright - fail.

/also, 'best' webcomics should pre-suppose the ability to draw

No rageguy either

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 10:26:21 AM
Being old, I am so out of touch I have not heard of most of those and never followed any of them regularly. As I recall, Sexy Losers peaked too soon and never really went anywhere after that. (There's tasteless funny and tasteless pointless, and SL had too much of the latter.) The only webcomic I ever followed regularly was Sluggy Freelance (not listed), and the storyline got weird enough to lose my interest after a year or two.

None of those comics are nerdy enough. No ctrl+alt+del? No PA? No xkcd?

awfulperson [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 10:45:01 AM
No Cyanide and Happiness, either.

Therion [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 10:47:46 AM
OOTS, biatches.

DantheApe [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-29 10:56:35 AM
the only comic i was even aware of off that list was Perry Bible Fellowship...and that one hasn't been updated in ages.

no Sin Titulo (new window)? no Evil Inc (new window)? BAH not even a link to The Abominable Charles Christopher (new window)...this list was full of lies.

Kyosuke [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 11:05:25 AM
No Sinfest either.

Shostie [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 11:07:06 AM
At least the writer included Achewood and Perry Bible Fellowship.

And XKCD sucks.

Yes. This. Very much so. Haven't read it in months, but man that shiat used to make me HOWL.

The only other comic I read regularly was PVP. No love for PVP on this list makes me all stabby.

I shall adapt a Daniel Tosh quote:

Tosh sucks! ;)

These are all one style of comic, no Sinfest, Perry Bible Fellowship, or Penny Arcade, as mentioned above. But also no PHD Comics, 8 bit theatre, or countless others.

/Likes these kinds of threads because even though the vast majority of the comics people post are trash, I ussually find one or two new ones to read.

rcain [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 12:10:25 PM
I am outraged that __________________ was not included in the list!

Oh and yes, Tosh sucks.
Not sure about anything else he's done, but Tosh.0 is about as painfully bad a show as you can get.

Mobkey [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 12:22:54 PM
I've heard of Perry Bible Fellowship, and I read Achewood. The rest of them are unknown to me.

PBF is #6 on the list?

Daniel Tosh is sometimes funny, his show is not.

And while I didn't expect to see it on a top 10 list, I have to mention Edible Dirt.

No, he suuuuu-uuuuuuuu-uuuuuuuuuucks.

List sucks.

There needs to be two different words for webcomics that tell stories and webcomics without real continuity that tell jokes.

So damn much this. I love the former, but so many only bother with the latter.

Here are a few comics I frequent.

Schlock Mercenary (new window) Wonderful daily Sci-Fi comic. I have no idea how this one did not make the list.

upload.wikimedia.org

Freefall (new window) (Been going on since 1998.) Sci-Fi with an Alien Squid in an environmental suit (Sam), genetically engineered Wolf (Florence), and robots. Well known for not using any Deus ex machine in its writing, a common complaint in Sci-Fi comics. Is now in color. (Updated 3-times a week.)

gra.midco.net

Sandusky (new window) A Mountain Lion, a Husky, and their human owner. This comic will kick Garfield's butt 8-days a week. Has been going on since 2006, past 500 strips not too long ago. (Updated 3-times a week.)

Flying Jester 2009-11-29 01:26:32 PM
No Wondermark? No Amazing Super Powers? No Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal? Bah.

Achewood is so well written the presupposed lack of artistic acumen places it in the same sphere as the more well drawn strips. Every once in a while Onstad slows down and lays some art out as well, but it is clearly not where the bulk of his talent lies.

casey17 [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 01:29:46 PM
The only ones I read:

Wigu/Overcompensating

Something Positive

xkcd

Penny Arcade has NEVER been funny. For awhile I kept reading it, thinking there was something I wasn't getting. But nope, just not funny. Achewood is the only one mentioned that I know to be humorous, haven't read any of the others.

IMDWalrus [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 01:31:36 PM
Well, they get credit for putting Achewood on the list, but other than that...

I think Dinosaur Comics deserves mention, for doing so much with so little. I can't think of any other strips that could get so much mileage out of six panels.

oh shiat I haven't checked on that in months. Got quite some reading to do now!

No Questionable Content = fail

Strega 2009-11-29 01:35:06 PM
The list is also missing Lackadaisy cats.

Shlock Mercenary was a great comic for me before I got tired of the author's multiple self insert characters and the villains always being required to carry the idiot ball.

Another great comic I recently dropped is Erfworld. It was fun to root for Parson when he was the underdog, but now he's a minor character and the previous underdogs are the all-conquering evil empire, complete with zombie troops. Hard to feel sympathetic for them.

Palmer Eldritch [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 01:37:08 PM
No Questionable Content, Something Positive, or Cyanide and Happiness? This list is terrible.

NuclearPenguins 2009-11-29 01:37:59 PM
PBF and Girl Genius were the only good things about that list.

I keep reading QC, but I have no idea why. I'm not even sure what that comic's about anymore.

List is crap!

I'm not sure where it's going, but I feel like I've invested so much time reading it to give it up

Perry Bible Fellowship is one of the most clever, unique and enjoyable comics I've read in my entire life. I love it.

No, no... that doesn't mean I don't like the comics you mentioned or that it makes the one you like any less special. I'm just making a point- PBF is f*cking awesome.

Exactly. It's not that it's bad. It's just slightly boring. It's not about indie music any more. There is very little social drama. It's just like watching ordinary people live their ordinary boring lives.

Second on Sinfest and Penny Arcade. Also of interest is Dresden Codak, which makes up for its long update schedule with its sumptuous art and nerd humor.

Obligatory link to the Dungeons and Discourse strip

Meh, I've check that one out. I agree that it's better than Garfield, not that that's hard to do. It's deficient on the story aspect though, which is what waters my enthusiasm for it.

lasercannon 2009-11-29 01:51:45 PM
Dr. McNinja should be on that list

Great. Nothing I LOL at regularly made the list. That's XKCD, Least I Could Do, and Sinfest, for those who're counting.

I always seemed to enjoy XKCD, but its humor is geared towards academica, basement dwellers, nerds, and all of the above. Still I think Randall Munroe should be Time Person of the Year.

Other webcomics I also enjoy are Shortpacked! and Day By Day, the Republican's version of Doonesbury.

Saborlas [TotalFark] 2009-11-29 02:01:11 PM
No Dominic Deegan? No El Goonish Shive? No College Roomies From Hell?

Oh, wait. These lists are subjective by their very nature. They're guaranteed to be hit-or-miss by anyone else's standards.
