He was persuaded to dress up as an eagle for an opening ceremony, only to find the only uniform they had was a chicken.

If it was, they ignored the crease rule through the entire regular season.

After his initial impact on the world stage, things went sour. He earned £700,000 in three years but, because he was still a competing amateur, the money went into a trust, which was unable to meet a tax bill and, in 1992, Edwards was made bankrupt

WTF?

I don't understand. Why did the money he make had to go into a trust. How does money just sitting in a bank account fail to pay the tax bill on it?

Bunnyhat: Why did the money he make had to go into a trust.

He was an amateur (It was the Olympics of old), therefore, couldn't earn money while competing. Therefore, I assume that he could still make money off of his sport, but it had to be kept in a trust until after he retired from sport (to prevent the money from helping him train.)

Hopeless? No, he was the most HOPEFUL ski jumper

Troy McClure: That's an interesting torch design for these games.

I will give you 1 Billion dollars if you let me go.

FTFA: "His profile could scale new heights soon with a film of his life starting production next year, with Rupert Grint, from the Harry Potter movies, in the title role."

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict this won't be as good as Cool Runnings.

Hopeless or not, it takes some huge brass ones to even attempt ski jumping.

Vinko Bogataj

All the times I've seen that, I never noticed that he almost decapitated some guy standing on the roof of that shack.

Here in the Vancouver area, the local joke is how much the torch looks like a giant doobie. Fitting, for the Vancouver games. We call it the Olympic Toke. (new window)

Well, perhaps this 'localised joke' is limited to amongst YOUR circle of friends, i've heard nothing of the sort.

Picture a ski's 'swoosh' (or tracks in the snow), that is what it represents.

/My joints are way more uniform that the torch's shape, you would have to be a rank amature to roll something resembling that.

If you're in the Vancouver area (or even in British Columbia) and haven't heard this, you'd better put down the joint or get out of the Wreck Beach hut you've been living in and read a paper/watch the news/interact with people.

/Go Eddie!

I hope Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles carry the torch across Nova Scotia.

My husband's carrying the torch... yada yada yada.

Pretty cool that we get to keep it though.

I saw this guy during his 15 minutes of fame. He was in Eau Claire, WI for a local ski jumping tourny. He was a drunken sot. What an idiot. I hope he does a jump, Its like watching NASCAR for the crashes.
