Who cares. At least Major League Baseball has prospered under his watch. The same cannot be said for Gary Bettman. Almost every hockey fan wishes he would retire immediately.

What people fail to understand about Selig is that he's not really the Commissioner. He's more of an "owner-in-chief". The other owners love him, but I don't know a single baseball fan who cares for him at all.

Which is kind of stupid of them. But baseball fans are idiots anyway.

So two months before the world ends, baseball will probably appoint someone capable?

had to share this story - one of the local take out places that he orders from and picks up removes all of the ketchup packets and other things like that form the counter because they told me he dumps all of them into his pockets. They lose money on his orders, but can't refuse to take them because of the business.

* Realignment of teams into three divisions per league, and the introduction of playoff wild card teams (1994)
* Interleague play (1997)
* Two additional franchises: the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998)
* Abolition of the National and American League offices and presidencies, and inclusion of all umpiring crews into a common pool for AL and NL games, instead of having separate pools per league
* Home field advantage in the World Series granted to the winner of the All Star Game in the same season (2003)
* Transfer of Montreal Expos franchise to Washington, D.C., becoming the Washington Nationals (2004)
* Stricter Major League Baseball performance-enhancing drug testing policy (2005)
* World Baseball Classic (2006)
* Introduction of instant replay in the event of a disputed home run call (2008)

For starters, I like the interleaque play.

The WS homefield going to the league winner of the All Star game is just plain wrong. Give it to the WS team with the better record. A better record should mean something on the WS level.

My tin foil says the World Baseball Classic is just being pushed by some to eventually replace the current MLB WS format. This year, the Yankees would have then went on to play Japan or something after beating Philly.

I know I will get heckled for this one, but maybe now we can see Rose get into the Hall. Maybe even Shoeless Joe. That is if they (MLB) ever get around to reviewing his case like Selig said they would back in '99

williamzabka 2009-11-28 07:24:10 PM
I had the displeasure/pleasure to meet Bud Selig and Henry Aaron at Miller Park right around when it opened. While Aaron might be the nicest human being I have ever met, Bud was pretty much a douchebag and acted like it all night. A sportswriter I knew who was there told me that Selig was pretty much always that way. I guess I am happy for the wild card but everything else he has done was a waste.

MLB not going full Instant Replay, which they should, isn't all Selig's fault, it's voted on by each team's GM. They of course over looked it again.

David stern is a sniveling worm but no one outside of football has done more to help his sport flourish. Even the dick policies he puts in place (dress code, changes in balls) really just add up to more press for the nba.

The only thing besides steroids that Selig missed out on was forcing the NL to institute the DH. Besides that, he's been a decent mud-range commissioner (half Pete Rozelle and half Gary Bettman).

jayhawk88 2009-11-28 08:00:48 PM
Hey I wonder who they'll get next? Peter Angelos? David Glass? Jerry Reinsdorf?

Still just amazing to me that we as a nation let this happen. "Oh hi, I'm one of the owners who tried to collude, and then lead a coup against the legitimate commissioner we he dared to call us on our obviously illegal actions. I think I'll just sell my controlling interest of my team to my daughter so I can be 'neutral' and be commissioner for the next 20 years".

Disgraceful.

And look at all the good it's actually done the Brewers.

*Milwaukee changed leagues, wiping the rivalry slate clean. (Though Cubs/Brewers seems to have a lot more heat to it than Brewers/White Sox or Brewers/Twins.) GOOD.
*Brewers get a grand total of... one wild-card berth and go out meekly to the Phillies in the NLDS. BAD.
*All-Star Game at his own stadium ends in a tie and chants from the crowd of 'Bud must go, Bud must go'. BAD.
*Miller Park built, replacing a stadium that nobody really thought needed replacing. BAD.
*Miller Park built in same stale parking-lot cavern as County Stadium as opposed to somewhere nicer within the city of Milwaukee. BAD.
*Logo changes umpteen times, replacing perfectly good ball-and-glove logo. BAD.
*Bernie Brewer no longer slides into beer stein. BAD.
*Five racing sausages instead of four. GOOD.
*Robin Yount and Paul Molitor evolve into Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. Braun and Fielder are all well and good, but really, what kind of trade is that? BAD.

So... yeah.

This would destroy the MLB forever. Seriously.

jayhawk88: Hey I wonder who they'll get next? Peter Angelos?

Andy MacPhail is supposedly one of the top candidates for the job, actually (along with Selig's assistants DuPuy and Manfred). Because when I think of successful people, I think of the general manager of the Baltimore Orioles.

Honestly, and this is coming from a Cubs fan who lived in Milwaukee for ten years. I really like Miller Park. Tailgating on opening day is something I looked forward to every year.

He has warped the league to the point where a guy who makes an illegal, very dangerous, hit to the head pays half the fine a guy was hit with for wearing the wrong color chinstrap.

He also, repeatedly, tried to bury damn conclusive research that the brain damage players take is permanent, and can lead to serious mental issues in relatively young men. In fact, his league once challenged the researchers to show it to the man they stated was the foremost exit in the field. When he not only agreed with the original findings but said the damage was more severe than originally reported they just pretended not to hear what he had to say.

His priorities are way out of whack.

Or for daring to celebrate a TD.

He's an egomaniac along the lines of Stern that basically thinks his league needs to stop being so "black" and wants everyone and everything to be as bland and inoffensive as possible.

Suing churches to prevent Superb Owl parties, actively seeking to prevent anyone from using the trademarked word "Super Bowl" even in referencing the game didn't exactly endear him to anyone either.

Keeping League Pass on DirecTV? Having everyone go shut down the online feeds every 15 minutes or so every Sunday? The whole NFL Network scam which would've kept most of America from seeing marquee games unless they bought their channel until the outrage forced him to back down?

Yeah, dude's a total cockbag.

Yeah, but he kinda has to. Trademarks can be lost through becoming generic. (CF, dry ice)

IAmRight [TotalFark] 2009-11-28 10:32:16 PM
Meanwhile, things done in Selig's reign as commissioner were mentioned earlier and they probably balance out the bad things (strike, canceled World Series, tie All-Star Game).

I mean, really, do you want to make it so the All-Stars have to burn out a pitcher from one team? As a Mariners fan at the time, I didn't really want them to force Garcia to possibly pitch for 9 innings. And I didn't particularly feel like having Garcia just lob a meatball up there in order to end the game so everyone could go home, either. It's an exhibition, it's ok to make it meaningless.
