I agree. She is competent enough, technically, but her interpretational skills are rudimentary, at best. She is only considered remarkable because she's a homely, middle-aged woman who happens to have a nice native voice. She needs to take that nice voice and work under a talented vocal teacher for a while. Then she might be impressive.

I heard dozens of better singers when I went to see Lohengrin earlier this month. Some of them were uglier, too.

The difference between them and Susan Boyle, of course, is that Susan Boyle made a bunch of talentless chumps look bad on a show dedicated to cheap imitation music, whereas the opera singers spent years training and studying and becoming professional.

The other difference is that the opera singers will still have jobs in five years.
