FTFA: As he held forth about where to target the deer so as to have the best chance of hitting the vital organs, our vegan guests toyed with the green chilli peppers coated in a batter-like substance, which was the only vegan-friendly ready-meal my wife had been able to obtain in Lowestoft at short notice.

Ok Mr. Vegan, fark you. I am sick and tired of people trying to go out of there way to accommodate these asshats. Your dietary choices should not inconvenience others. I will make an effort to please my friend who is allergic to gluten, but the I have told my vegan friends that if they want food, bring it themselves if we are having a party, or don't go out to dinner with us.

/the last straw came when I was denied BBQ because of a vegan friend

I'm a happy omnivore, and I couldn't give a fark what other people eat, I've encountered people who take vegetarians' and vegans' eschewing their dietary choices as a personal affront. Or others that go "Ah-ha! So you're wearing leather shoes" as though they've exposed some horrible hypocrite. It's just food. While I can appreciate a parent such as the author of TFA having legitimate gripes over food preparation, on the whole it's not anyone's business what people choose to put in their mouths.

That said, I've always wondered if vegans are okay with BJs.

From the article
"I'm becoming a vegetarian."
"You can't," I said.
"Why not?"
"Because I can't be bothered to cook for a vegetarian."

This seems like the wrong tactic. The one my parents did was much better. I was probably about the same age as this kid, 12 or so. They said sure I could be a vegetarian, but that I would need to cook for myself whenever the family was going to be eating a non friendly meal. This resulted in me gaining a pretty good foundation in cooking, and also showed me what a hassle it was. I lasted as a vegetarian for 9 months.

Just for the record, that's not the reason I am pissed off about this whole "vegan thing". It's because they do shiat like "OMG!!!11 the eggplant parmasian has an egg wash! I can't consume that!" Which is horseshiat if you ask me.

One time, I wore a t-shirt to an upper division ethics class. The teacher was a vegan and all that. It was bright orange. It said "no animal testing" and underneath was a picture, crossed out like "NO!" of a mouse sitting in a desk trying to take a scantron test. He was so confused. But he had his little pencil and he was trying!

I did a gis. I couldn't find the shirt. =(

Analyzing vegetarianism in the US is flawed. It's close to asking: which would you prefer, a tasty animal bit, or a godawful plant bit? Most vegetarian dishes in the US and western europe are boiled something or the other, and taste like boiled cardboard in very old boots.

A couple of thoughts:
1. Even in the US, meat was not eaten for every meal (that's the meat industry lobby you see in action nowadays. Farmers used to have meat-heavy dishes, but they also worked it off. Pre-tractors).
2. Give a confirmed meat eater some decent vegetarian supplements, for crying out loud! Compare some godawful animal-based food with some excellent vegetarian food for once.
3. Meat should be a small part of an average week's food intake. Meat with meat and meat sauce with meat toppings might sound and taste good, but is definitely not good for one's health.
4. What?!?! *Moderation*? WTF is that?

/self-edited rest of rant. noone wants to listen to reason. This is fark, after all.
//*STELLAR* vegetarian cook (Indian, Thai, Italian)
///no, not inviting farkistan over for a culinary orgasmic experience.

Haha, yep, there's your problem. I couldn't believe people didn't like broccoli until the first time I had it in a western restaurant. Same with brussel sprouts. Those are the two big stereotypically bad vegetables right?

Actually, many of the people who get bitterly angry at morons have simply been exposed to the douchebag side of the vegan culture, like peta. I suspect everyone who overgeneralizes other groups of people, be it vegan or antivegan, are ignorant morons.

forestguy: Nothing wrong with vegetarians, except those trendy, holier-than-thou asshole hippies.

I'm in this camp. I have no problem with vegetarians. Sure, eating only vegetables, seems silly to me, and being a vegan in my eyes would be like getting waterboarded, but I am not going to get all pissy that someone else isn't eating what I consider delicious meats. Personally, I find tofu a terrible chunk of nastiness, but some people enjoy it orgasmically. That's their deal. I will have a salad here and there, just like I will have a steak here and there. As far as I am concerned, a good sandwich with a variety of meat, veggies, and bread is pretty close to a square meal, and is often highly delicious.

The only problem I have is what I will call the PETA effect. When you are eating your delicious medium-rare filet mignon, and some asshat comes up to you and screams about meat being murder, and how many cows died for your steak, etc., that is where I would be upset. Don't interrupt what I am enjoying just to yell about your ideals to me that I most obviously do not enroll in. I am not sure this ever actually happens, but the general premise is what matters most.

I once had a conversation with a Vegan friend where they brought up the whole "livestock industry is one of the most polluting industries on earth because of the methane produced by the animals" thing. I concluded that fine we should all become vegetarian then, but first we would have to have one mass slaughter/feast to get rid of all these excess animals, we'd call it the culling. He didn't look kindly on that idea either. I guess he thought that in thanks for not killing them these animals would stop pooping or something.

The vegetarians I know never make a big deal out of their dietary habits and it only comes up when they ask if they can grill their veggie burgers on my grill (like I care, apparently some people feel that pollutes the flesh-searing spirit of the grill or something.

Vegans I know are all self-righteous dickheads who have little to no real information on dietary health & nutrition.

Vegetarian/Vegan diet choices, when selected for the purpose of sparing animals some cruel treatment, IS hypocritical unless you dispense with using any product made by anyone other than yourself, since a butchered animal was involved somewhere.
