Seems more like a community effort than a solo author vigilante.

I saw this on the news tonight and laughed. A local resident reported on the news that "she got a lot of good punches in". The wanna-be purse-thief was later taken in. Seems she has several charges on her record, including burglary, disorderly conduct, theft, and heroin possession. Gee, who'd'a thought.

With a little bit a make-up, a bump of coke, and a smile, this young woman could easily be a prostitute. Why the hell are you trying to swipe somebody's purse when you could make an honest living slangin' 'tang? What do you get stealing a purse? $40? I mean, honestly...

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2009-11-28 12:35:25 AM
Second, or third, or whatever, the awesomeness of Geek Love.

This is a book that you will not see made into a movie soon. If it is, in my lifetime, I want to be an extra.

'Show off' was no insult in our family, but Arty had a way of turning 'sweetheart' into a thumb in the eye.

Because prostitution is humiliating!

Carroll, who has 2006 convictions for theft and criminal mischief...

Repeat offender it seems.

srtpointman 2009-11-28 12:43:09 AM
Well, I for one and happy to see that people are now stopping to watch crimes in progress instead of just walking by like they don't see anything. Maybe in a few more years they'll get to the "maybe someone should call the cops" level.

fearsomeorange 2009-11-28 12:43:24 AM
Came to say this. 2006 convictions? That's a career criminal right there.

Man, I would NOT fark with someone who'd written a book that included a mother who poisoned her unborn children for profit, a woman with a fetish for mutilating circus freaks, and necrophilia.

Do your research, criminals!

Definitely do! Dunn came in to my bookstore in Seattle, back in '89 or 90, and offered to autograph all our copies, just because she was in the neighborhood. Fantastic woman, excellent novel.

Don't worry folks! Now that the purse snatcher has been caught, she will do hard time. 6 weeks suspended sentence! Crime does not pay!

Hey, with all those priors, she may get two weeks or a month in the county lock up. Just in time for Christmas dinner!

500 fights, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 500 street fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate tough guy. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are.

I guess that is what you call a trained street boxer...

Heroin is the drug of choice in that part of the country. Meth too. But c'mon Portland, I thought y'all were cooler that that.

Don't believe the oddballs in this thread. I love books; I love to read. I have a mental issue that makes it hard for me to leave a book unfinished.

Geek Love is farking horrible, and I did not finish it. It's ridiculous in the New Edge style, full of calculated attempts to make the reader shiver and say "Ew." Put `em all together and, while you won't shiver much, you will wonder why the Hell you're reading the book.

I'm happy the author got some licks on a mugger. Maybe the mugger will have to read Geek Love as part of her rehabilitation.

Um fark that, you kick me in the shin you are in for a beating. That is a very sensitive part of my body. I would rather take a shot to the balls over a kick in the shin.

Recommending a book you like that someone else may not like is acceptable, even though I do not consider myself a missionary. But what is the point of insisting that someone else not read a book simply because you disliked it?

I'm just asking, but I sincerely doubt you can come up with a legitimate response.

Didn't say no one should read it; suggested that everyone who liked it was an oddball, encouraged folks not to believe the glowing reviews, and postulated that reading it would be part of an effective punishment. I even delineated why I thought it was trash.

It sounds like the same thing as saying "I'm telling you: don't read this", but it's not. Your local library probably can get you a copy; mine did.

DrunkArse 2009-11-28 01:36:01 AM
I'd GILF it.

I lost my copy of Geek Love in a breakup. Never got to read it. I live blocks away from the scene...so there's a chance. Not a good one, but a chance.

OK, fair enough. I am an oddball, and even I had a few little problems with it. I wouldn't give it a glowing review, but I think it was, within limits, -- and you should be able to tell within the first ten or twenty pages, as with most books, if those limits are acceptable -- well done and interesting.

One thing for sure: once you read it, you won't forget it soon, if ever.

/Unlike most of the stuff on today's Best-Seller list.

Really this is by far the most Portland story to come out of Portland in a while.
