FTFA: Suzie Grogan vowed to live each day like it was her last after she was diagnosed with the devastating condition in August 2006. The 47-year-old decided to organise as many things to benefit her family as possible.

Short-sighted, yes, but not stupid.

If you thought that you were going to die, would you rather spend your last few days/weeks/months having fun with your loved ones or sulking in bed? It's the same theory behind the whole Make-A-Wish thing. Wanting to make shiat count doesn't make her a "Stupid biatch."

There are many ways you can enjoy what time you have left with your friends/family without racking up huge amounts of debt that will burden them after you are gone.

I guess it would make sense if it was money she already had, and was just wasting (sort of) on having fun with her family, but this was debt she was incurring. Debt that someone would have to pay after she dies. How in the hell does that help her family? I sympathize with her because hey, everyone copes somehow, but it's still pretty retarded.

I think it would come out of her estate. If she had none her family wouldn't have to pay. If they had gifts they might be repossessed, but they can't repo a trip.

IANAL, and so am most likely completely wrong.

Make-A-Wish Foundation requires compensation for your "wish" if you DON'T die. Otherwise, it's unfair to the kids who DO die.

Bet you didn't know that.

ulairix 2009-11-27 08:19:09 PM
Well, 50,000 quid isn't too much, she should be able to pay it off in a few years time.

Still, its a stupid thing to do.

well the article says she took equity out of the house. but instead of paying off her kid's school, which would be a good gift and real help, she bought two cars and gave some cash to a remodeling contractor. great use of limited resources dumbass !

Satanic_Hamster: What did she think her family would do about all this debt when she died?

Nothing. Your heirs do not pay your debts. Whatever your estate is...that's it.

If you die with an estate of $100,000, and debts of $150,000...your family does not cough up that extra $50k. Your creditors get to fight over the $100,000.

/of course...screwing your family out of the $100k is asinine, but there ya go

Entitlement issues much?

It's her money, not her family's, not her kid's. My family does not *deserve* my money, they can make their own. I worked hard to make my money, I get to enjoy it. I pay to bring up my kids well, and give them a good education, the rest is up to them.

If I *choose* to give it to family, good for them. If I choose to enjoy it instead of hoarding it -- good for me.

Debts do not disappear upon death, the estate must pay off the debts.

Life insurance would also have paid it off assuming she had it.

If you'd like to avoid that, just die deeply in debt with no posessions.

The debts just disappear, trust me.
