So would a reboot of Space:1999 be shown on the History Channel then?

I could never suspend my disbelief beyond "The Moon knocked out of its orbit by a nuclear explosion" part.

1. Space 1999 was the awesome

2. I really wish people would stop using "reboot" over "remake". Last time I checked only operating systems are rebooted, and it doesn't mean to remake, but to restart.

The Eagles were some awesome spacecraft....and their counterpart Hawk?? Not as good as BG Vipers, but still cool in a 1999 sort of way.

I used to watch this show in quiet fascination on my black and white TV on Saturday afternoons rather than go out and play, and I watched very little TV. The bizarreness of the show back then is beyond question; yet, I couldn't stop watching it despite the huge cheese factor.

caperbear 2009-11-27 09:12:24 PM
actually the episode with the spaceship graveyard "haunted" by the hypnotic tentacle cyclops thing was one of the scariest sci-fi episodes i've ever seen as a kid, still pretty intense in it's own way. the dragon's domain, or something, i think the ep. was called.

unfortunately, as fondly as i recall the show, i also recall how campy it was. it was sci fi written by people who didn't understand anything about science. if they are thinking about a relaunch, they need some better premise than "boom! moon travelling faster than the speed of light..." without it somehow not killing everyone on board

and here you go:

exploration of the dark side of the moon reveals a massive alien device. while the scientists of moonbase alpha are exploring it, the device activates, revealing itself to be some sort of propulsion device (or hyperspace by-pass generator, whatever) causing the moon to warp out of the solar system and travel randomly through the universe. cue disco music.

And I'd completely forgotten about it until I saw this thread.

GvmtSpook: 2. I really wish people would stop using "reboot" over "remake". Last time I checked only operating systems are rebooted, and it doesn't mean to remake, but to restart.

A "remake" suggests that it's an updated recreation of the same basic story. Like the various King Kong movies. A "reboot" indicates that they're taking the basic premise and doing whatever they want with it like the new James Bond and Star Trek movies. A "Re-imagining" is just an even more obnoxious marketing buzzword that means "we ain't got shiat left creatively but remember this?".

Add me to the "Thisbwas so cool but scared the shiat out of me" crowd.

Scene that did it for me was some creature swallowing crew memebers whole and expelling the dead husk.

SwiftFox: I could never suspend my disbelief beyond "The Moon knocked out of its orbit by a nuclear explosion" part.

I was 12 or so when I first saw it and the first thought that popped into my mind was "Why didn't they just hop into a space shuttle and fly back to Earth?" I was barely familiar with the speed of sound but I knew it took a loooong time to get out of our solar system by conventional means.

I liked Space: 1999, And UFO. I have them both on DVD.

Unfortunately in the case of UFO, there is no way they could get away with the hot purple hair space babe costumes these days.

simpsonfan 2009-11-27 09:57:48 PM
I remember when it premiered. It was supposed to be the greatest thing since Star Trek. It was not. No, it was worse than Lost In Space.

And Lost In Space was pretty bad, but it at least had Dr. Smith vs the Robot every episode.

Then there was a show 'Earth 2' which was so confusing, after a few episodes I was hoping for a Klingon attack.

Great sets, Great models, nice props and the most horrid, stilted acting the world has ever known. Barbara Bain always seemed like she was half shot-in-the arse; fully half her part was wandering around with blank eyes saying "Jahwn..?" Martin Landau was so busy setting a determined chin I'm surprised he could spit out dialogue, and Barry Morse was like Dr. Zarkov on heavy tranquilizers.

Still, during the great Trek void, it was the only game in town.

It wasn't 'campy' - not deliberately, anyway. It was teeth-achingly sincere, which, combined with the arcane, ridiculous scripts, could be considered camp in retrospect. It was idiotically forced drama.

Some corrosion is eating all the shuttle/eagles, because somebody blew a bunch of oxygen onto the moon. Bain is out camping, and the air is about to get siucked away. Landau, having JUST been informed that none of the ships were flightworthy, jumps in one to save his lady love... and crashes about a half mile out. Presumably, he had to hoof it on home again... We need suspense! Now we need heroism! No we need Danger! Noo.. you need some damned common sense.

In the meanwhile, the camping group is eating these mushrooms that start to grow on the moon, and start getting stoned. The chief pilot guy has a freakout, and goes paranoid from it...

...hey.

Maybe it WAS campy, after all..

Any Pie Left 2009-11-27 10:44:06 PM
Not it wasn.....wait.... DAMN! Kind of, yes. Close enough. I also liked that show.

There are some differences, though; Blake's was a SF retelling of Robin Hood and had a major point of always trying to attack the federation, active rebellion. The folks in Firefly were always on the run, wanting nothing more than to make some kind of living and be left alone, and trying to avoid the government.

I was pretty young when this was on
I seem to remember a creepy ep with some kind of tentacled monster that would suck people in at its base and seconds later spit out a smoking dried out corpse

I'm all for a reimagining and I'd like to see the originals again

It's been a while since I've seen any Blake's 7, but the hook for me - especially at the time - was the interplay between Blake, the dedicated rebel, and Avon who was, shall we say, less than enchanted with being a rebel.

It did set the standard for "small-unit composition" for a number of subsequent shows. Only Farscape came close to matching the multiplicity of motivations and goals among characters.

The Bad Astronomer [TotalFark] 2009-11-27 11:12:11 PM
Actually, I'll defend a lot of the show's science. It became clear that a higher force was at work, guiding the Moon along. It plays into several of the episodes. And it was a magnetic effect, not the explosions themselves, that blasted the Moon out of orbit. It would still vaporize the Moon, but that's another issue.

And I totally had a HUGE crush on Catherine Schell, and met her years ago at a Space:1999 con. She politely declined my marriage proposal, but I sat at the bar and had a lovely conversation with her. Barry Morse, too-- I credit his portrayal of Victor Bergman as an inspiration for me. He was never afraid to say "I don't know" when he didn't know something. He was a tribute to real scientists.
