Incorrect. Cops will ask YOU the race if you don't mention it. It is the stated policy of most news organization to not mention race even if the badguy is still at large. This policy grew out of a legitimate desire to not report on the race of suspects already in custody.

I remember one of the local news stations in Roanoke, Virginia as being horrible about this as well. One time, they were having the chief of police on to help give warning about a manhunt going on. Guy shot his family, a few strangers and was on the run. Considered armed and dangerous. They gave his name, address, clothes, car info , high school info that he went to years ago, hair style, dental info , tattoos, jewelry, EVERYTHING about him but his phone number and social security number. Or his skin color...
