Muslims don't need a room to pray. They can pray anywhere, as anyone who has traveled in an airport can attest to. In fact, Muslims don't even require a space to kneel and pray. If there is no such space they can just do it wherever they are sitting or standing. Besides, it's not the job of a public school to provide a room for students to pray.

Hmmm, I wonder if the Christianists are going to be all up in arms about a Muslim's right to pray in school.

My question was why did the school even know that she was praying? If they really can prey anywhere and in anyway then it would be normal. After reading I feel as if something we left out like a whole other side of the story. By even making it known to people that she is praying she broke one of the rules. You are to pray out of the public eye otherwise it becomes self serving like what we have here which is attention whoring.

I could kind of understand if she was being harassed by other students because of her religion and therefore was afraid to pray even if done so quietly; but I still don't see why she would need a whole separate room.

The article says the kid was fine with praying anywhere, the school was the one who wanted her to pray in some special room (most schools have a bible study club, but they don't get a chapel), that they would not be allowed to have. I bet bossing this kid about was brought about by Christians.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't one quiet spot somewhere in the school, and while I don't think it should be roped off for this girl, I think she should be able to seek out these quite places and use them. The school doesn't have to do anything extra but not discriminate. I am as "freedom-from-religion" as possible, and even I can't muster up the energy or logic to care if someone is praying quietly to themselves. As long as they aren't proselytizing or getting all preachy, where is the logical problem?

As a librul, I insist that all sorts of special provisions be made for Muslims to pray at the expense of Christians. She should have a separate room with the best carpeting available, big screen TV, nice furniture. While she is praying, all of the students who are Atheists should be forced to sit quietly and wait, and all of the Christians should be forced to go out and stand by the gutter (which better fits Christianity).

Only if they're doing the "I'm going to pray to Yay-zuz now!" schitck.

I used to pray before a really tough final exam in highschool, but quietly. Yes, I studied as well, but it didn't erase my sheer mistrust of derivates.

Besides, the New Testament clearly states that you shouldn't announce that you're praying, fasting, or even giving money to charity. It is adviced that doing these things privately and quietly, will you truly be rewarded.

Gunny Walker 2009-11-27 09:43:49 AM
They should not encourage this sort of activity. One day she'll fail a math exam, hijack a sailboat, and BOOM! no more Brooklyn Bridge. They should lock her up in Gitmo for admitting to be Muslim. Or at least give her indefinite detention until it can be determined if she was connected to 9/11. Don't tell me I'm over-reacting. I was fishing on the lake the day the Cole blew up.

Yes, but I also have an understanding of, and appreciation for, other religious views. What bothers me is that it seems, according to Blink's comment, that it ok to biatch about not being able to pray in school as long as you're not a Christian. Which is both anti-Christian and silly.

From another article on the same topic that someone linked to in this thread:

School officials have denied that Aden or anyone else has ever been denied the right to pray in school, but that the school did tell Aden's family that it would not be possible to set aside a special prayer room for Muslim students on school grounds.

Of course if what you said is what happened then it's not correct.

No, his comment was that if it had been a Christian being banned from praying in public schools there would be OUTRAGE! But since it was a muslim, all those people who are normally here to yell about prayer being allowed in schools will be oddly quiet. Hence the "nothing to see here", because the thread will likely be empty.

Let her pray.

Students deserve the right to practice their religion to themselves.

The only time I have a problem with it is when it's teacher-led or organized by the school itself in order to promote one particular religion.

As long as she can do it quietly, without disrupting the class, let her do it.

I think it's an outrage anyway. And, if you're so into the Constitution and it's meanings, you should be too. The school should not infringe on her right to express her freedoms.

both articles state that they were the ones that said she couldn't pray in other places because of safety reasons but that setting a side a private separate area would also not be possible.
school created the problem, then said the solution was impossible.

It also says that there's a separate area in the cafeteria and in the gymnasium set aside for students to pray. I won't deny I skimmed the article and maybe got some parts of it wrong.

I don't think it's that big a deal. Why does CAIR have to get involved?

GolemGolem 2009-11-27 10:08:21 AM
According to a press release issued by CAIR Monday, seventh-grader Nasra Aden was allegedly told by a teacher last week never to pray on school property, but then today was "informed by school officials that she would be allowed to pray in a private area. In fact, two other Muslim students joined the girl in prayer today at the school."

Levesque said that private area is actually a corner of the cafeteria at Lewiston Middle School, an area where students have regularly prayed in the past because it's in a low-traffic area.

Having RTFA and the other link above, the only douchebag in this story - as far as I can tell - is the CAIR for not at least getting the school's side of the story before filing the complaint and causing a stink, especially since all of their demands are already covered by school policies.
