Wow I remember first seeing this on beyond 2000 back in 95 or 96. People had traveled to the USSR as US doctors were banned from doing this.

They showed what the people saw and it reminded me of an old 64k demo. Just a pattern of dot and very vague shapes. Like a row of 4 vertical dots for a whole street corner, very low resolution. Must have been a 15x15 array.

The goods newsThisbymaster: Saw this in Scientific American in the 90s. Old very old.

Well then, the good news is that once we finish reforming the U.S. health care system with an eye toward political expedience rather than toward pragmatic cost-solving and protective measures we'll have squelched a large chunk of the funding which allows the U.S. to drive the lion's share of medical innovation and adoption (which also thus subsizides the distribution and accessibility of those technologies and treatments globally). Once that happens, American companies like the one who made this gizmo won't be able to pawn their Soviet-era crap off on desperate foreigners any more. Unfortunately, it's not like the U.S. is crowding out access to this development and subsidization role, so no one else will be filling the gap, but if we can hold on for a couple of decades the Chinese should start stepping up to the plate. Of course their stuff won't be cheap due to exchange rate normalization, and they do have a host of other very costly and pressing issues they'll need to deal with domestically, so ... meh ... maybe India will do it.

For what that probably cost, they couldn't attach it to a pair of sunglasses that suit the shape of his face? A guy like that needs wider shades, maybe rectangular for style, but not too vertically narrow, or he'll look like a pedo.

I'm assuming you've picked up on this by now, but this is for real, and scientists have been working on this for some time. Initial projections indicated that a 1,000-electrode array would be available by 2014, which would allow those who have the implant to read 2-inch type clearly, which is nothing to sneeze at, really. I have no idea if the development is still on track with these projections, though.

What are you going on about? The Gov't is who pays for 80% of the research in this country, and is responsible for every major breakthrough, by funding university and public research labs.

Unless, of course, you count 'restless legs' or 'bitty peener' as something that needs a breakthrough.
