To be fair, the guy frying the turkey could be considered the Fryer.

Honestly, if you don't have even an intuitive grasp of Archimedes' Principle, or of the fact that boiling oil can burn flammable things, you have no business making toast, much less frying a turkey.

It's basic science, folks.

Darwin Archimedes strikes again. These farktards must have failed kindergarten.

FTFA: The turkey fryer was set up outside near the back door. Capt. Mike Zuber said a propane tank had a worn hose that caused a gas leak, sparking the blaze.
The fire spread to a nearby wood pile and a pickup truck.
Damage was estimated at $15,000.

So repairing half the house (rebuilding and replacing stuff with smoke damage), and replacing the wood pile and the truck totaled 15K? What kind of dump was this?

duckpoopy 2009-11-26 11:36:56 PM
OK, not the oil overflow. My bad. These people were geniuses after all.

Ah, I see. So the hydrogen sulfide smell that's deliberately introduced into propane, precisely to allow you to detect gas leaks, wasn't enough for this guy?

Yeah, I kinda farked up on that. I assumed it was the standard accident. As it turns out, the accident was far more preventable and stupid.

One Thanksgiving, I hope to read an article that says something like this: "The fire spread to a nearby tennis court and engulfed several luxury cars before being contained. Damage was estimated at $175,000."

That would be a welcome change from reading about trailers and pickups being burnt up.

another article says this: The homeowner told NBC 4 oil was heating in the fryer, which was placed at the back of the house, when the fryer fell over from the wind.

I once came home from work and found my housemates drunk and frying a turkey ON THE COVERED WOOD PORCH.

"Ah, tell ya what guys... How about *I* just take over from here. You guys have done enough already. Really."

I will not be surprised if one or more of them someday make a Fark headline, or at least a basic Darwin.

Most of the world pays through the nose for energy. And still will, no matter what we do.

And they manage to not set themselves on fire.

/btw, hydrogen is a net energy sink -- play with something else if you're looking to save anything.

Given the weight of the oil, frying rig, and turkey, I seriously doubt the "wind" story.

One article: Fire crews were able to contain the blaze in about 15 minutes, but the fire had already ripped through most of the home

Another article: Columbus firefighters say no one was injured in the fire Thursday. They contained it to the back of the two-story house.

I'm with buckler; the weight of the oil & cooker (the turkey was not in the cooker at the time) would likely outweigh a wind excuse.

Considering the guy was frying the thing between his house and his wood pile, no reason to assume it was sitting on a sturdy tripod. Perhaps, by wind they meant 'gravity'?

Pfft, they made it up to 15-20mph where I was in Ohio. We had to move our fryer into the garage next to the cars, lawn equipment and gas cans for fear of the wind blowing the fryer over. And ruining our turkey, which would have sucked.

Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about with hydrogen. It's not difficult to makes serious headway with it. I know someone who heats a 3500 sq foot house with it for about 20 bucks a month in electricity. So g'head, keep believing your handlers.

The thing is, you have to prop the fryer up with some tins of naphtha. If there are any bunches of small, dry twigs around, you can stuff them into the spaces between the cans for extra support. The fryer itself gets really hot, so you might want to insulate it by wrapping it with any rags you might have around the garage that may be soaked with oil or paint.
