Unfortunately, he's now going to be inundated with people asking why he paid for THAT funeral but not the one THEY'RE about to have.

I like Shaq. The only thing I can think of that would make me like him more is if he would pick up Ben Stein and slam dunk him.

Nice of him.

Welcome to the Machine: I simply wish there were a Hell, so this baby mama could burn for eternity.

This is such a farked up story. Apparently, even the cops investigating it found what was going on so disturbing that a lot of them are now in counseling.

If he was really classy, Shaq would have done it anonymously. But hey, good publicity is good publicity.

What's strange is your comment.

My guess is: poverty, abuse when she was a child (sexual, physical, mental), severe drug addiction, psychopathology, mental illness. Pick one or more.

She probably needs a lot of help, but likely she'll just chucked in jail for the rest of her life.

I hope her baby is adopted immediately and has a happier life than her mother or her sister.

yea, i just read somewhere that the little girl's father is saying that the mother sold the girl to pay off drug debts. I don't see anywhere that she's pregnant though. But she does have a 7 year old that was taken away.

Even if she was rehabilitated i don't think she will ever escape the stigma of what she did.

I think this is her (new window), yes?

oi_piss_me_off: i don't think she will ever escape the stigma of what she did

I'd be surprised if she could ever escape torturing herself with what she did. I suspect any punishment another person could give will pale in comparison to what she will do to herself. It's a very sad situation.

Perry payed to take some kids to Disney World after they were allegedly denied access to a school b/c they were black. Or something along those lines. Big story a few months ago.

jekxrb [TotalFark] 2009-11-27 02:18:45 AM
oi_piss_me_off: i wonder why she didn't enter a plea

Probably because she doesn't have a lawyer yet. I don't know; my knowledge of criminal proceedings is pretty much limited to Law & Order, but perhaps if she has requested a lawyer, she isn't allowed to enter a plea until she's consulted with him/her?

oi_piss_me_off: Who do you think is more hated? This woman or women like Susan Smith?

I don't know. They're both pretty sad cases of women who did very despicable acts. I don't know these women, so I don't want to judge them on why they behaved as they did. I'm not erasing personal responsibility, mind, just suggesting that jail and/or the death penalty doesn't necessarily instill that sense of personal responsibility in people. Especially when there are circumstances like drug addiction or mental illness. Nor is it always a case of 'those people are evil, they should burn in hell'. People do evil things, but ultimately I believe there are very few truly evil people in this world. But I can be very idealistic at times.

I am NOT saying that this mother was a victim of her life and should therefore be excused from any punishment because she was a drug addict. To the contrary; I feel very strongly that she needs to be made to understand exactly what she has done and the cost to herself and to society, she needs to make reparations and she needs to clean up her addiction. I'd rather see some good come out of the situation than more pain and suffering; I suppose it depends on whether we want to lower ourselves to the same level as murderers or whether we want to try and be somewhat enlightened.

That said, there are some people who are so f*cked up they need to be locked up and never, ever let out. They might even be better dead, but I wouldn't want to have to make that decision.

Lets be honest here.....is it possible for Shaq to do anything anonymously?

Soumac: If he was really classy, Shaq would have done it anonymously.

Although none of us will ever reach that state, there comes a point where it becomes nearly impossible to do anything anonymously. If you or I were to be touched by a particularly sad story it would be easy to send a check to cover funeral expenses without offering a name, knowing it would be given an anonymous annotation. However, if Shaq were to do so it would be immediately picked up by a news service who had been tipped off. I suppose he could hire some full time workers to make sure the donation remained anonymous, but there's a good shot one of them would sell the story anonymously for a few bucks and we'd be back where we started.

Bottom line is that I think it's damn near impossible for most of us normal folk to know if celebrities are legitimately decent folk or if they're just blinded by good publicity. But despite his horrid movies and rap songs, I've heard enough good things about Shaq to conclude that he's a legitimately good guy. So I'll stick to that opinion until I get some good reasons to believe otherwise.

Not comparing Shaq to Sinatra's greatness but you never know whats going beyond what the media wants you to see.

Not to mention the fact that Shaq isn't the only one involved who can spread the story. His manager, publicist, accountant, friends, the funeral parlor...

Shaq has always seemed like a good dude, this is just another example.

/thats because the cost of a funeral is based on your ability to pay

That depends on your ability to eat and drink while crying. If you lack it, my guess is 3 or 4 days.

No on all of those, the basic problem is weakness but that's ok people like you that live in this PC world will continue making excuses for them and letting them off the hook.

Punishment, if remorse is proven then rehab, if no remorse then the key gets thrown away.

Just say that you want baby-mamma to deep-fry like fried chicken. This way you fulfill the racism quota and still get good-guy points by wishing ill upon the woman who did this horible crime.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go eat some rice and beans.

He also payed for Minneapolis Lakers star George Mikan's funeral in 2005. So I'd say that he's either a really classy guy or just gets off on paying for other people's funerals.

Shaq does things like this all the time. I remember reading how, while he was in Phoenix, he went to Wal-Mart after every home game to shop, and when he was finished, he paid for like 50 of the customers behind him in line. And he did this for EVERY home game.
