One more reason to be thankful for the atomic bomb.

Sheppard spent the second half of his tour of duty as an armed guard commander with a gunnery crew. His ship was on the way to the Philippines when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, ultimately ending the war.

Thank you thank you thank you, Mr. Sheppard sheppard sheppard sheppard.

They were broadcasters, not stadium announcers, and AFAIK, Sheppard was never a broadcaster and they were never stadium annoucers. So, EABOD, bigpeeler.

Anyway, I waited anxiously for him to announce Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and it was marvelous.

Yeas, being old and announcing sports... what would the world do without such people. Announcers for sports are as productive to society as mimes. No, let me fix that, sports players are as productive as mimes, I couldn't say what an announcer for a mime is.

U don't reed gud, huh? (Try the post above mine. I know 'associated' is a big word, but there's lots of dictionaries on the internet. Or bigpeeler's uneducated post where, with dignity and eloquence, he tells Yankee fans to 'chew a bag-o-dicks)

I'm very much a Yankee hater, but that voice is one of a kind and will be missed.

/thought I read somewhere that Jeter will still use a recording of Sheppard's voice to announce his plate appearances.

Larry Mahnken 2009-11-27 12:01:06 AM
1986: Paul Zuvella is traded to the Yankees. While he's in the clubhouse talking to a reporter, Bob Sheppard comes up and says:

"Excuse me. Is your name pronounced 'Zoo-Villah' or 'Zoo-Vella'?"

Zuvella replies, "uh, Zoo-vella."

Sheppard says, "thank you," and leaves.

Zuvella turns to the reporter and asks, "was that God?"

The reporter replies, "pretty close."

Went to a game in the old stadium last year and was worried that I wouldn't hear him announce the entire game, mainly because word was that he had the flu or something like that. However, he was fine and it made the game ten times better. I'm not a Yankees fan at all, but his voice made up for it. I can honestly say that his voice booms through out the entire stadium, even when I was in the bathroom, I could hear him loud and clear over the sound of flushing water. The other guy who covers for him and is probably going to replace him sucks. I'm just glad that Jeter decided to record him and uses the recording to announce him coming up to bat.

I hate to break this to you, but that wasn't Sheppard, it was Jim Hall. The only time you heard Sheppard was when Jeter came to bat.

Sheppard's final game in person at Yankee Stadium was the regular season finale in 2007 (he missed the ALDS with a bronchial infection), and he recorded the lineup for the final game at Yankee Stadium. But Jim Hall did all the rest.

johnsoninca: Vin Scully told Bob Sheppard to get off his lawn.

Vin is in his own category. It's unfair to compare him to anybody. Though there is a common consensus that the single greatest playcall of his life was entirely silent (All time homerun record being broken. Followed closely by his work in the film For the Love of the Game, he was soo good in that.)

The same goes for Bob Sheppard, certain people are institutions. They defy comparison to their compatriots. They make the team great, they make the institution great. Much respect to Sheppard.

I hope that New York finds a suitable replacement. I'd hate to be the first guy trying to fill his shoes.

Lost Thought 00: Why should we show respect for him just because he did a menial task for the Yankees? Would we show respect for the PA announcer of the Tulsa Shock? Didn't think so.

Why did Don LaFontaine get paid millions of dollars a year to voiceover movie trailers? Bob Sheppard was, simply put, the gold standard for stadium announcers. He did the job just right.

zarberg 2009-11-27 03:51:22 AM
Can we get the Yankees TV and radio announcers to retire now, too? Also, anyone out there want to remove Tim McCarver and Joe Buck's voice boxes for the good of all humanity?

MrCab [TotalFark] 2009-11-27 06:06:01 AM
I remember my first trip to Yankee Stadium hearing this guy. It was actually Old Timers day, so I got that as a bonus. This dude was awesome. Big, booming, voice. And like subby said, nothing fancy or catchy, just did his job. But the voice was right for it, like the old NFL film's guy.

Now that I've said that - I'm with everyone here hating on Michael Kay, John Sterling, and Joe Buck too. Sheppard's earned enough respect that he gets mentioned first though.

/ Mets Fan, although admittedly I heard this guy before Yankee fans made me hate the Yankees

downtownkid 2009-11-27 07:25:09 AM
I'm a Yankee hater and even I loved hearing Bob Sheppard. The man had an uncomplicated job, sure, but he was absolutely great at doing it.

Anyone comparing him to Broadcaster announcers is a dipshiat, but the real dipshiat of the thread award goes to kevinshields, who to date is still the only one to mention money, budget, payroll, etc. Nice job, turdmunch.

I don't know about you, but I only know of one other stadium announcer by name even:

i199.photobucket.com

Both defined what it meant to go to their respective stadiums. No shouting, no goofiness, just straight forward Voice of God. To the point that both have impersonators announcing for them. God speed, Bob.

\don't know what Bob's replacement sounds like, but Sherm's is pretty good, if not a little more awake than Sherm was....
