I'm confused. I like to think of myself as somewhat worldly, but I am at least sure that I'm not a complete ignoramus. Hence my query: Who the fark is Robert Falcon Scott? One of the most famous explorers? How long is the list?

He did not allegedly get there first - Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was first at the South Pole. Now he was a great explorer.

If memory serves me right, the competing Norwegian expedition relied primarily on dog sleds. Scott's transport plan included a mishmash of dogs, motor transport, and horses. His horses proved to be ill-suited to the environment, and the motor transport wasn't able to cope either.

Amundson he was competing against was an expert dog handler - Scott didn't have much of a clue and delegated the purchase of horses to a guy who didn't know much about them.

According to the wiki, Amundson took offense to a toast celebrating his Antartic polar first "to the dogs."

/Where's the clip from Red Dwarf where Rimmer says the bit about Oates as recorded in Scott's diary is a fiction by Scott, who probably ate him? I'll go digging through youtube for a link.

Poltergeist got a PG rating??? *checks IMDB* WTF? It was originally R-rated but they somehow got it down to PG. Wow. That scares me even more than the movie itself.

He made it to the Pole, saw that he wasn't first, died on the way back.

One factor was the cold (DUH). Actually, yes. If it had been a little bit warmer, the sled/dredge runners would have been easier to move. Their weight caused a thin film of water to develop on the runners, a natural lubricant. It was too cold for this to occur, making it harder to move.

I did not need the mental image of someone pooping maggots, which is what I got from the headline.

He may have been woefully under-prepared and pretty much doomed from the start, particularly in a race against Amundsen (who damn well knew what he was doing. Oates said as much in his letters home), but I'll be damned if the guy and his crew doesn't have one of the most magnificent memorials on the face of the Earth.

Scott was going to bag the Pole, but when he found out Amundsen was there he instructed his people to put the emphasis on science as a way to save face if they were beat. Scott never bothered to learn to ski, to drive dogs or to understand what how to prevent scurvy. He had no idea what would be best for a sledging diet, packed for teams of four and then decided to take a fifth man in the Polar party. This threw rations off for the remainder of their time on the ice. Due to Scott's inattention, or because he delegated the job to someone who had no experience their expedition rations didn't provide enough calories to support them so malnutrition set in. He had no method for laying and marking supply depots, so often they were hunting for a depot with no food in case they didn't find it. He didn't really know what to do with the motor sledges and didn't bring the man who'd built them. One of the sledges sank in McMurdo Sound because nobody knew how to read the ice. The other one broke down after about 150 miles and just sat there because there was nobody who could fix it. His malnourished, non-skiing, scurvy ridden party is dragging 200 pounds of rocks on the sledge, all in the name of science. Meantime Oates had an old wound from his service in the Boer War, and the wound was opening again. His feet were frostbitten black because the boots were poor. He couldn't pull the sledge, could barely walk and the others couldn't pull the sledge with him on board.

Amundsen made it look easy, but it took twenty years of work to do it.

There was an old Masterpiece Theater mini-series called "The Last Place on Earth" (from the book by Roland Huntford) that really deflated the Scott legend. Scott was indeed criminally unprepared, negligent, and generally incompetent.

It's because at the time, PG-13 didn't exist, and there's no nudity in the movie.
