Begun, the Christmas Wars have.

Who the fark cares? They paid for the ad, they can wish whoever they want whatever they want. Don't like it, don't shop there.

Fark "those" people.
Fark them in their puckered PC pie holes.

I still, and always will, say "Merry Christmas".

No_One_Special 2009-11-26 01:02:51 PM
Relax, Eid al-Adha shifts by 11 days every year. Once it passes December it'll be another 30-some-odd years before muslim holidays start to "conflict" with yours.

That said, go back to wishing people Merry Christmas and keep yer mitts off my holidays.

simpsonfan 2009-11-26 01:03:03 PM
If that particular holiday is this weekend, they can mention it now. But just as long as they go back to using 'Christmas' in later ads.

It is Christmas. Anybody offended by that can just be offended, not our problem.

It sounds like they've revised their policy and are now planning to include Christmas as well as a bunch of other holidays.

Sooooo....what's the story here again?

Exactly. Who cares. They are a store, they are doing something to try and bring in customers, in this case Muslim customers. It is not some kind of corporate statement that some people's holidays are better than other people's.

RevRaven: But there's no culture war going on. And you'd be a fool to think otherwise.

You would be, yes. I walked into a Best Buy yesterday and do you know what every single door greeter, aisle assistant and cashier told me as they helped with my purchase? Have a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. The Indian manager of my neighborhood gas station who is Hindu and knows I'm Shinto wished me a Merry Christmas as I got gas. All of my co-workers, half of whom aren't Christian, have Christmas decorations up. There's a Christmas tree on the floor of our government workspace, surrounded by no less than eight atheists and no one cares.

This "War on Christmas" is generated by activists, their lawyers, a knee-jerk reaction by Conservatives and the media. The rest of modern America doesn't really care.

Animatronik [TotalFark] 2009-11-26 01:09:55 PM
Seems pretty obvious that this has nothing to do with a muslim holiday being near christmas and everything to do with a company that won't post the name of a Christian or Jewish holiday but seems A-OK with saying the name of another religion's holiday.

Of course, it could just mean that they decided to post the names of all the holidays before the controversy. I'm kind of doubting that. In any case, they are free to do as they please and people are free to be offended.

But if you want to call it the Christmas Wars, that's OK. I'll just file it away with all the other shiat that people post.

Just saying.

Dearest Emma,

Some days I think this War on Christmas will never end. Yesterday, we engaged the 101st Atheist Airborne Division at Akron. I've never seen such carnage. Young Private Paul was impaled on a holiday tree before my very eyes. At one point, it looked like we would be overwhelmed when our supplies of the modified "Origin of Species" ran low. I didn't know how we would be able to prove to the hordes that Charles Darwin was a militant Marxist fascist, but once again the power of prayer brought us through. Oh, my love, I dream of the day when Chairman Maobama's reign of terror is finally over and we can once again celebrate the occasion of our Savior's birth in peace without the Jews and Muslins trying to hijack it with their "religious" holidays, but if brutal hate-fueled war is the only way to achieve peace on earth, than so be it.

Yours in Christ,

Jonathan

That, in my opinion, is a great question. The Christmas season started early this year. I started getting the peppy "Merry Christmas" wishes at the start of November. Stores started playing Christmas music in October.

If there's one thing I can't stand about Christmas, it's the music. Let's make one-thousand covers of the same eight songs and play them over and over for two months!

EvilAvatar 2009-11-26 01:19:50 PM
Pincy pretty much said it.

However... The principal of the matter is still the point. Pandering to Muslims during an overly obvious time of Christian holidays in a mostly Christian nation, can only be taken as a result of psychological warfare on America.

Stay with me on this - If an intelligent Muslim-American truly wanted people to be more tolerant of their faith, do you really think they would want a major corporation to spotlight a minor holiday in complete indifference to other major days of other world religions. Heck no, because every Average Joe Christian is going to ask themselves why the Muslims get to be so special.

As an Atheist, I fully support the notion that indifference to religion is NOT the answer. Holiday's such as these are meant to spread joy, peace, and (dare I say it) tolerance. This may be not the founding reason for these (mostly) holy days, but the evolution of mankind sees the necessity of days that bring people together, instead of finding some way to make them stand out.

Respect the differences of others, and educate those that don't. Maybe once that happens those aliens in Vega will finally come for First Contact.

;)

BlippityBleep 2009-11-26 01:23:40 PM
Yeah, Americans are pretty much dumb as shiat when it comes to this. Hell, the university here had the day off for Yom Kippur and called it as such but don't you dare officially mention Christmas! Idiots.

In a city in Japan you can see the church of Scientology across the lake looking through a shinto gate. It's framed and everything from the entrance. And you know what? Nobody gets freaking butthurt about it.

Christmas provides the busiest shopping days of the year, which begins tomorrow in earnest. Its maybe a good idea to remind people of the season so they spend lots and lots of moola. Waiting till December would be too late.

I have two things to say in response to this:

1: Christmas has been a FEDERAL holiday since right after the American Civil War.
