Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that's a write-off.

Damage to the planes and fence is estimated at $200,000.

Must have been an expensive fence.

Police do not believe alcohol or any other drugs were involved.
If not that, then there damn well better be a followup explaining what was.

That's the 2nd time someone has driven into airplanes at Gillespie Field recently.

Police say a 57-year-old man was driving with his chocolate Labrador just after 4 p.m. Wednesday when he fainted and crashed through a fence near Golden State Flying Club at Gillespie Field.

Did the dog just have a boob job?

I smell a lawsuit comin'!!

There's no way the average guy carries enough to cover those planes!

I have owned a choclate lab before. He was personally responsible for hundreds of dollars of damage, only because I never got him anywhere near any private aircraft. Being familiar with the breed, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was probably the dog's fault.

Private planes are very expensive, this guy is going to be in shock when he finds their is a limit to what his insurance covers. Only $200,000 damage? Then he must have hit only Cessna 150's and 152's and not that many.

worst terrorist ever. somebody should have told him that you only attack BIG planes FULL OF PEOPLE and IN THE AIR.

There maybe a (uninsured / under insured) clause in that state's insurance law that could apply to the policy holder.

Older single engine 2/4 seaters are in the $45-70K range, so yeah.

And what a happier one might look like.

I was pleasantly surprised\mildly disappointed by how tame the GIS results were. The image that sprung to mind when I read that in TFA was much more fun.

Did find this though, South Bay Pet Talk's pet of the week, Kenwood:

Having had three when I was growing up, I suspect you're right. I'm sure the dog didn't mean it though.

The guy wrote off two 152s, so even being very generous that's only going to amount to $100k. Don't know what the third aircraft that took damage was, so it's hard to guess what the dollar value might be, but say it's a 172.. That's gotta be an expensive fence.

Hey a hammer and a little body filler, and you'll never notice anything was wrong.

Bondo it fixes everything!

Yup, ALWAYS a good idea to have good liability insurance. I've been seriously thinking about increasing the property damage coverage as I have a 50K limit and this article reinforces that thought. Sure it probably won't have a situation like this, but if I do I'll be glad I have it.

My car may be under a salvage title, but it can still do plenty of damage if I'm unlucky. My car insurance is under $350 a year anyway since I turned 25, I think I can afford the extra money to up it to at least $100K or $150K

Ouch...thats gonna be expensive. Started flying in cessna 152's and 150's. Fun little planes.

A medical condition? There are plenty of non-chemical reasons a person might pass out. But they shouldn't be driving if they know about said medical condition.

Exactly, but these conditions typically don't just pop up out of nowhere.

for trashing a fence and a few planes?? Take your meds.

It depends. We need more info. If the guy has a condition that he KNOWS can cause him to pass out without warning, they yes he deserves a beating for being so reckless.

Though now that I think about it, back when I worked at the TV station we had a diabetic run into the side of the building because she wasn't keeping track of her blood sugar and passed out. Didn't think of that possibility. Still would be their fault though.

Plus the epileptics. Even with meds, people can occasionally still have the anomalous seizure out of no where. It's not at all common, but does happen.

As an aircraft dealer at www.global-air.com (shameless plug) I can find you a couple of the nicest Cessna 152's for $35,000 each, making that a pretty damn expensive fence!

the truck adds $52K, plus using government contractors for the fence, and yeah, easily $200K.

having your name in print stating that you fainted, priceless.

Sometimes fainting and other normally benign events like it are the first sign of a serious medical condition (heart problem, vascular issue, blood sugar, tumors, etc.) I'm kinda hoping that this is the plot climax of this guy's problems and not just the dramatic cold open.

cynicalbastard 2009-11-26 06:22:10 PM
Can you still slap those "This Aircraft is operating without a Certificate of Airworthiness" stickers on planes? 'Cause if I had a terminal disease I think I'd buy some Bondo Special, fly the crap out of it in all weather, and one day it would just suddenly sort of disassemble around me leaving me holding a joystick and sitting in the front seat like Wile E. Coyote in some cartoon.
Cool way to go out, man.
/have to get a WW1 helmet with goggles first, tho...

nicksteel

Coming from the perspective of a man who rebuilt his own aircraft from the ground up I can tell you that if someone were to run into my baby with a truck, the beatings with crowbar would cease only when my moral improved.
