"powered by four kerosene-fueled jet engines."

I wonder whether these are turbo-jets or ram-jets.

Brave or foolhardy, take your choice.
But I'm surprised his giant balls don't interfere with the aerodynamics.

I'm a little confused,
FTFA: "He banked sharply left at first, and strong winds buffeted him. At one point he flew through clouds and was lost from sight. Below him, a ferry sailed from Morocco to Spain."

Did this ferry actually have something to do with the story but that part got left on the cutting room floor? Possibly a failed Haiku attempt by the author of the article?

I GOTS TA KNOW!!

I listened to an interview with him on NPR a night or two ago. He said it was going to be about two minutes of work, and 13 minutes of "pleasurable flight" without having to do much of anything. I guess he got those numbers reversed. I hope he makes it on his next attempt, it's a neat little story.

Ramjets need nearly supersonic speed to start.
Probably R/C model airplane turbine jet engines.

Dearly beloved, I will now read the special vows which Homer has prepared for this occasion. Do you Marge take Homer in richness and poorness, poorness is underlined, in impotence and im-potence, in quiet solitude or blasting over the Atlantic Ocean in a jet powered, monkey navigated... and it goes on like this...

There's a fine line between "having a brass pair" and "being damn fool crazy", and I'm not sure which side of the line this guy's on.

Still, I say we salute him, and wish him luck on the next try.

Looks like cute little turbos, aftercooled? Guys around here use two turbochargers off of diesel engines to construct jet engines the turbines have a nice light aftercooling scheme, just uses free pressure. I wonder how much lamp oil his tanks hold?
Could be scrams but the fuel wieghs about 8 pounds a gallon and light, weak power units like his can be had at any hobby store.
Rockets might work out better for him, Estes makes some nice solid fuel boosters and a little hydrogen peroxide is plenty light for fuel, LOX tanks needn't be prohibitively heavy, provided you allowed for use of only ambient 02 at speed just about like a ramjet. A nice hybrid seems almost desirable, since the original 40 seconds of air time, personal rocket belt, personal air travel devices seem designed by Daedelus.
If it can't do a lift off under it's own power it's not even as cool as an Aercoupe(even though Aercoupes are cool as hell).
Also, helicopters are incapable of flight if you resist putting you'r future in an aluminium rod not quite as large around as you'r thumb.
One snap and it's game over kids, and forget autorotation, that requires being able to adjust the angle at which the rotory wing encounters air resistance, but when you lose one, the others simply mock you as you become a mark on the landscape.
I really liked F-14's.
