All of them are on one page? They're doing it wrong.

TheOmni [TotalFark] 2009-11-26 04:28:23 AM
I have already seen one of them with another sitting unwatched on my harddrive. I'll have to put the rest on my To Watch list.

And now all of them but Toto le héros (which Blockbuster doesn't carry) are in my blockbuster queue. Thanks Den of geeks!

I have three of those on my Netflix queue (Volver, Katakuri-ke no kôfuku (The Happiness Of The Katakuris), Ryeong (The Ghost)) and I've seen several of those already. I saw "Last Tango In Paris" during its original theatrical release. I've seen "M", "Låt den rätte komma i (Let The Right One In), "Persepolis" & "Cronos" too.

Cool List. Thanks.

I am going to look for the Spanish and French ones. I don't know about the others though. I have never really been able to get into films that are in a language I don't understand.

I've seen most of those and they're all great films but trying to compile such a list is such a useless endeavor. It would be easier to compile an "American movies you really, really should see" list.

cranberryzero [TotalFark] 2009-11-26 04:50:19 AM
was happy to see Man Bites Dog on there. God damn that's a good movie. Saw it shortly after it came to the US on VHS and I still just have it on VHS, a poor tape that's nearly worn out.

Cytokine Storm: Rather than agree or disagree with the list, should just turn this thread into a big foreign language suggestion movie thread.

It's somewhat recent, but I really liked it.

So many parents just took their kids to that movie because 'Pan' was in the title, and then were shocked by the film itself. R ratings aren't just thrown around for nothing. But it was a damn good movie once I could rent it on DVD and not deal with screaming children.

Personally, I wish 'Red Violin' had been on that list. Yes, it is a Canadian film, but it spends most of its time in Italian, German, and Chinese, and is a beautiful story on top of all that.

/list needed a nod to the Kurosawa/Mifune films
//saw 'M' as a very young child. Wow that was a farked up and amazing movie

No, that's a very valid argument. Unlike Hollywood films, foreign directors tend to be a bit "deeper". The problem with however, is non-native speakers never get to experience the film as it was intended. When given the options of translation (dub or sub titles) the viewer is always in a state of disconnect with the film. With sub titles, you have to split your attention between the little words at the bottom and the mise en scène. With dubbed language, you are always at a disconnect because of lip sync. Humor also becomes a problem, certain proverbs or colloquialisms or puns may not translate well so, jokes or intended jokes get lost in translation. Also, unless the viewer is completely familiar with the culture he or she will loose a lot of the references or settings, or why certain characters are motivated etc.

I absolutely love Spanish and Italian films, some French films- I guess, but it always bums me out thinking about what I may be missing.

lol wut? Yeah, you haven't seen a lot of foreign films. It's not all Godard and Kiarostami you know. Most countries have their own versions of Hollywood.

Same with "Princess Mononoke". People were all going "Well, Myazaki is, like, the Japanese Disney, right?". When the demon-worm infested boar first showed up, it got really interesting.
Still, they stayed in and tried to shield their kids from watching, instead of just walking out. Weird.

Anyone mentioned Kitano's "Hana-bi" ? Or any of his movies (as long as they don't involve Omar Epps, really)?

Kitano movies, in general, are just fun and awesome.

My favorite anime reactions in theaters are Akira, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Perfect Blue (and Millennium Actress to some extent.). People who think all animated films are for children are fools in general, but during Akira it was fun watching them just think they were going insane. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust most of the parents dealt with decently until the gory parts at the end, and then they were just gone.

But Perfect Blue was hilarious. None of these parents had read anything about the movie, and it was obvious. That movie is a mind fark in a half for people who know what it's about getting into it, but parents with little children, well, you could see the brain matter melting out of their ears. That was well worth the ticket price to watch.

When I went to see Millennium Actress, I knew the director and enjoyed his style, but someone had told me that it was the sequel to Perfect Blue. I couldn't figure out how they were doing that, but I was cool with it, at least I would get to see lots of people freaking out and leaving at odd parts. Then I saw one family come in with children, and a second, and a third, and I couldn't help but wonder if the general population had become that much dumber in such a short span of time. After the movie let out, I ended up calling my friend and demanding to know what the fark was wrong with him. It was a good movie, but not connected to Perfect Blue in any way.

/first time I saw Grave of the Fireflies a friend had recommended it and told me it was a comedy
//I went to school the next day and just slugged him one

Add 'Oseam' (spelled correctly) to that list. An amazing movie about two orphaned children, an older sister who is blind and her younger brother (maybe ages ten and eight), and them trying to survive in the world, and ending up living at a Buddhist monastery. By the end of the movie I was bawling like a little child, even Grave of the Fireflies wasn't that sad.

'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring again' was also very good. It's just a story about a small Buddhist temple, the old monk, and the pupil he raises there as the seasons change and the world changes around them, and how it affects them. Very well done.

'Wonderful Days' is also good if you can find an original copy, not the American release. It was released in Korea with English subtitles, so why the company that handled the American release felt the need to re subtitle the movie, cut parts, and remove the music is beyond me. But, as far as cheesy sci-fi romance movies go (set in the post apocalyptic future, of course), it was pretty decent. But you really do have to watch the original version and not the butchered American one.

Strange, no Yojimbo.

Yeah yeah, it's a popular one and all but I can't think of a film that more reciprocated and added to the culture of westerns than it did.

Were there ANY Kurosawa films?

I was under the impression the writer was trying to show how "intellectual" and "hip" he was.

La Femme Nikita (the French film)

Belle de jour

And a Japanese movie about dancing lessons I can't recall the title of.

I like subtitles for non-English language films, even if I don't understand the language, I feel I get more of the nuance of the dialog in the original language.

carligula 2009-11-26 07:11:40 AM
ok. Today's Swedish lesson:

The title of the movie is "Låt den rätte komma in", not "Låt den rätte komma i".

The later one means (for some, anyway) "Let the right one cum inside"

/dunno if it'll get filtered

I'm a big horror fan and I've seen most of the high profile foreign horrors so I've moved onto more obscure or less hyped ones.

If you're a big fan of faux documentaries, check out Noroi (Japanese). It's a bit long and the low budget nature spoils some of the shots but it builds up atmosphere brilliantly and there's a 2 second shot right near the end that ranks among the scariest things I've seen (and I'm hard to spook).

Martyrs (French) is also a great horror. It's probably the only hostel/saw-esque torture porn type films that tries to add a bit of depth and do something different.
