TFA: You'll just have to forgive the use of pounds in our estimates. That's the standard unit of mass used for measuring astronaut urine.

Let's just hope that the contractor designing the waste disposal system didn't do the work in metric.

While the liquid waste system uses imperial measure, the solid waste disposal system is rated in metric assloads. Different contracts or something along those lines when the job was tendered.

A human bladder can hold about 2.2 pounds of urine at maximum capacity.

Holy hell... 2.2 lbs? How long have you been holding that in??

I think someone screwed up. That got to be close to a litre of urine.

Actually, you're pretty close... 2.2 pounds of urine would be just over liter if I'm doing the brain math right. A gallon of water weighs roughly 8 pounds, and is 128 ounces. So, one pound of water would be 16 ounces. Given that, 2.2 pounds of fluid is like 35 ounces which is just shy of a litre.

/I know from experience that I can indeed fill a pint after a long stent before breaking the seal.

I've hit about 800 ml in one shot before. Admittedly a liter is probably not very healthy, but it's doable. I've done ultrasound bladder scans on people that maxed out the device at over a liter.

Also I've been told that if you put a catheter in someone, and they clear 1500-1800 ml, clamp it for a while. The bladder spasms are apparently quite painful if you drain more in one go.

Or for easier math, 2.2 lbs is right about 1 kg. And standard urine is just slightly more dense than 1 kg/L. Yay metric!

Have you ever seen a commie drink a glass of water?

Bomb Head Mohammed 2009-11-26 10:17:55 AM
can somebody explain to me (seriously) why they bother dumping the urine? once the material is "up", there's basically no cost to either keeping it up or bringing it down. however, there does seem to be quite a cost indeed in venting the stuff. for example, the vent can get clogged, the crystals could re-interfere with spaceship components, and so forth. In the case of apollo 13, they told the guys to stop venting the urine (well, there was a miscommunication but this is the gist of it) so as to not change the aircraft trajectory and as a (partial) result one of the guys got a urinary tract infection. i'm sure there's sound science behind the thinking (such as perhaps the liquid water they drink can be stored outside of the crew area while urine would have to take up effectively crew space) but I can't imagine what it would be, especially on the space shuttle.

of course, who the hell cares. it's basically a museum piece now that failed in blowing up on the one mission where it should have - when john glenn was up on his thieving space junket.

FTA: NASA reckons it's unlikely that further waste dumps will be necessary before the landing. Our initial estimates confirm this hypothesis - barring a major Tang binge during the return journey.

Heh, they still drink that crap?

Now that you mention it, no.
It's all in the vodka and pure grain alcohol eh?
