Because the legal system is designed to let people out early. This way, even if he's released early, he has another life sentence, and even if he's released early from that he won't be up for parole (or whatever) until a significant fraction of the 500 years is served... assumably the sum of the minimum times is significantly longer than the human lifespan, effectively guaranteeing an actual life sentence.

I would have preferred the State put him to sleep, but this works. He might have got a lighter sentence if he committed this crime in Jackson County instead of Clay County. They don't pussyfoot around up north of the river.

Last I heard, in California an inmate would need to be sentenced to SEVEN sequential life sentences to have a reasonable chance of spending life in prison.

I, for one, am a firm supporter of the death penalty - when there is no doubt the convict is really the one who committed the crime. When he or she has confessed to others or there is other indisputable evidence - not cases such as Cameron Willingham, where there is strong contradictory evidence.

The article said that he was found guilty not on just one charge, but 20. Each charge, since he was found guilty on all of them, means a certain time in prison. The judge sentences for each charge, adds up the numbers, and voila!

He also shot and injured two other people at the scene. Article doesn't make it clear, and the ages on the other two victims are close to the murder victims.

Yeah, shot and kill 2 people and injure 4 more, and scare the bejebus out of a 5th. I'd say dying in prison is a fitting sentence.

This kind of sounds like the plot to a Parker novel except Parker ends up with some broad instead of spending half a millennium in the joint.

I was the detainee.

Ended up with 2 months of detention for 2 mins of total hilarity, I will let you think if that was worth it.

You've got to mount a plaster pirate ship on the steel roller so it looks like it is riding up and down on the waves as it goes over the prisoners.

I'm only a supporter of the death penalty when it comes to saving money.

And I won't stop at prisoners, either. I could save us a fortune.

Seems to me that when there are cases like this, the guilty party should be given the option of the death penalty or serving his time.

And since it was his option...it would not have to be humane at all. A stabbing a week in a different part of the body. Until he finally dies.

Whatever. With the parole system the way it is, he'll be out in 400 years. 450 tops.
