Killjoy bastards. Spotted Cow is FANTASTIC. In fact, ALL the New Glarus beers are. In fact, their Belgian Red is the most incredible beverage I've ever ingested in my entire life. I literally DREAM about that stuff. Better than I could ever possibly describe with just words. If you're a beer snob like me, I encourage you to do whatever you have to to get a hold of at least one bottle of that magical stuff during your lifetime.

That said, I admit that I admire the HELL out of Dan Carey for sticking to his guns on this one. He has repeatedly refused to ramp up the brewery's production in order to meet what would be the demands of a national sales strategy, because he knows he'd have to cut corners and make compromises on quality in order to do that. And that would defeat the whole purpose of getting to more people in the first place.

Besides, his beer is worth whatever you need to do to get it. Really. I moved to the Twin Cities from Milwaukee almost three years ago, and I still make the pilgrimage just over the river to a liquor store in Hudson at least once a month to bring back a couple of bottles of the Belgian Red. Seriously, the stuff is mind-blowingly incredible. Trust me on this one.

Or, did the cow have spots?

The beer, brewed by New Glarus Brewing Co. in Green County, is not licensed for sale outside Wisconsin, said brewmaster Dan Carey.

Big Enos must have gotten tired of Coors.

Protip: Spotted Cow actually sucks.

Apparently, the brew master doesn't think spotted cow is a very good beer, but continues to make it because of the increasing demand.

/Like it myself.

^ THIS

It sells well & the NG brewery lives & dies with it (it's their overwhelming flagship beer).

It also has a HUGE problem with spoilage on tap (due to yeast in beer). So many bars in WI, I had to send it back.

Brewmaster Dan Carey is one of the best, but it is still a limp beer.

Though better than BudMillerCoors, so props to that!

^ only if you age it a few years. It is NO WHERE near drinkablility when new.

Trust me on this. Get a couple bottles (plus their Raspberry Tart), put in in cool damp basement, forget about it for a year or two, then consume.

Otherwise, it just tastes like alcoholic Black Cherry soda & not a proper Belgian brew

Your welky!

Spotted Cow is the worst brew that New Glarus makes but it sells like Budweiser so they keep it on their lineup. Everything else they make is top notch. Reminds me I need to run and grab a couple cases of Cranbic later today.

I live five miles away from New Glarus, and spend a fair amount of time in a few local bars, and have never heard this. It is a fact, however, that the new brewery was built to handle the demand of Spotted Cow. There is also very little yeast in the more recent S.C. brews, due to the general public's aversion to "stuff" in their beer.

I will not turn this into a Wisconsin beer thread, except that there is much much great beer there.

They used to have this:

www.capital-brewery.com

What is called a pre-prohibition pilsner. ^ 1900 was the recipe Schlitz used at the turn of last century.

This was a nice, clean, straight every-day beer with none of the current American Lager-traits of skunkiness or wateriness.

I am surprised the PreProPils style has not taken off in this craft-brew savvy culture

Sadly, Captial stopped making this & started making another wheated-light style to compete head to head with SPOTTED COW

GSrecluse 2009-11-25 03:28:55 PM
For reference, Spotted Cow is similar looking and in texture to Blue Moon, (cloudy with the yeast still in it) but the taste is quite different -- light and hints of fruit. That said -
The Belgian red is much better tasting in general and especially if you can find it on tap. (Yes folks, here in Wisconsin a small brewer simply saves containers by making the personal size Belgian Red a 750ML bottle)

~~~
Have not heard of what?
I brought the issue up with the NG people about spoilage, as it is obviously the fault of the tap house (unclean tap lines with dried-up yeast attract opportunistic secondary infections that are plainly obvious in a light style like SC.
At LUTHERS BLUES, I had to return 2 pitchers of SC as it literally smelled like vomit.
Would rather have a good SC than be here in NYC, where Yuenglings are $6.50 a non-honest pint (lived in philly area, where they are $2)
The plus side to this story is I finally know where a BADGERS bar is in NYC now!
If you've had it properly aged, you'd agree.
And yes ... I'm a hella-snob, who ran out of his NG stock, though I still have my UNPLUGGED series from early this decade!
The incumbent breweries took advantage of the situation as prohibition was lifted to write protectionist legislation to replace the outright ban.
You can bet that bribes campaign contributions from said breweries had a lot to do with it.
Well-moneyed industry lobbyists. Greedy, immoral politicians. An electorate who says nothing.
The downside of democracy.
