The Wire season 4? BSG season 1? The West Wing season 2? I deem this list...worthy.

Still missing Friday Night Lights season 1 though.

My only real complaint was Mad Men season 2. I thought the second season was considerably slower than the first one, where you had the questions surrounding Don's real identity and how people would react when they found out driving everything forward.

They should've included Breaking Bad on there, though.

First, shows that are still on are not classics. (exception, Simpsons)

Two: With rare exceptions (Arrested Development) Shows that only last that last three years are NOT classics.

I'm looking at you Veronica Mars.

By the way, Simpsons have had some great episodes in the last few years.

I think that The Wire was classic TV. As was Homicide.
But overall, I agree with you in principle, even on The Simpsons comment.
The Wire season four was truly a standout season. You cannot help but feel moved at that whole arc.

So there are only 3 TV shows that aired prior to 2000.

3 good ones is more like it. I think you made a list of the top 25 TV show of all time, you're easily culling 20 of them from this decade.

The Wire - best show to ever be on tv
Every damn character they brought into the show was incredible.

I don't know, man. There were some good shows back in the day. The problem is that few people have an immediate memory of them. Shows like the Wire and BSG, etc that only relatively recently went off the air are fresh in viewers' minds.

Lame list... no Mary Tyler Moore, All in the Family, Gilligan's Island, Sanford & Son, Hawaii Five-0...

Anything after 2000 hasn't had TIME to become "classic" yet!

Well there were good shows, of course, but this decade has been a TV renessaince. The 2000s is to TV what the 1930s was to film. Were there great silent movies? Sure. And you might want to include them on lists of great movies. But they don't really compare. I think the stuff which holds up bests are certain comedies, like Seinfeld or I Love Lucy.

Do you have something about Baltimore? Almost as bad as Chicagoans and the Blues Brothers :-)

Homicide was a great book, damn good show. I didn't catch the Wire...as it was on HBO. Might Netflix it, seeing I hear many good things about it.

Probably. A lot of my favorite crime writers come from Baltimore: Pelecanos, Lippman, Simon, Lehane...which is odd, considering I live two hours from Chicago.
If you enjoyed Homicide, pick up a copy of The Corner; yes, they made a miniseries of that too, but a lot of the things Ed Burns & David Simon covered in it pop up in The Wire.

It should be said I also enjoy The Blues Brothers. And Ferris Bueller's Day Off--say, there's a classic TV show they missed!

The prime time soaps of yesteryear, Dynasty and Dallas for instance, can hang with their current cousins easily. Certain action shows weren't all that bad in their time but, like you said, they just can't compete. They look dated and foolish by comparison Invariably current shows will look the same when compared to whatever awesome CGI the future brings.

"Classic"?

Please, THE SOPRANOS Season #1 was probably the greatest single season of TV ever. Ditto Season #1 of MAD MEN

Also throwing in the last season #2 of BREAKING BAD.

Hell, I think it's pretty hard to determine the true "best" season.

the last season of Six Feet Under.

agree on west wing 2 and bsg 1 though...

also that 70s show 1 and bbt 1 are pretty amazing at what they do.

Imo any list of top 25 that doesn't limit to a single genre is a crappy list. Better to have multiple top 10 or top 5 lists of a single genre than try to compare The Simpsons to BSG to West Wing. I don't expect to ever fully agree with someone's top X list, but it should be because of a finer point than whether they prefer drama to comedy.

ManateeGag: I disagree, subby, Season 8 is the best season of the Simpsons, for two simple words: Hank Scorpio!

Probably my favorite episode, and I was hoping he'd pop back up at some point (although I guess they'd have to explain why homer doesn't still own the denver broncos then, but I spose he could have just forgotten and now they are rich and then they piddle it all away or give it to homers brother or something).

Season 6 for two simple words: The Shining. I will grant you that "You only Move Twice" was the last hurrah for the Simpsons. The last truly, truly great episode.

I agree with you and disagree with TFA's preference for season 4.

(let's see, how many caveats do I need to throw in here?)
For what it's worth, in my opinion, your mileage may vary, yadda yadda yadda...

I experienced The Sopranos as a continual downhill slide, not just in terms of the characters' moral descent, but also in quality. Season 1 was everything good TV should be, but by the time I hit season 4, I had started to no longer care whether anyone in the show did the right thing or the wrong thing or even lived or died. I pushed myself through season 5 just because I had watched the last four seasons, and finished it off asking myself why I was wasting my time on this. I didn't bother to see the last season at all, even after everyone kept going on about how at the end they

Um... I don't want to get into whole thing here, but The Simpsons seaosn 4 while still having some incredible classic episodes like Last Exit to Springfield and Homer the Heretic, there were still a few issues being ironed out through that year. Either seasons 6 and 7 is the best ever, I still can't decide.

Ugh. Alias was fine and all, but it doesn't belong anywhere near a top 25 classic TV shows list.

jedzz 2009-11-25 12:40:08 PM
The Simpsons: I guess you can legitimately pick any season between 2 and 8, but I would pick 8, just for the awesome, daring, and hilarious episodes such as the one where Homer works for a supervillian, the one where alcohol is prohibited (leading to what is by far the most spectacularly funny closing line I've ever heard on the show), and, of course, Grimey.

Survivor: Picking Season 1 is by far the most lazy answer possible. In retrospect, what happened was inevitable, as Hatch was the only person out there who was legitimately thinking of how to win from the first episode. That, and the way the producers were still searching for the best way to structure the episodes leads it to not hold up nearly as well. My pick would be the Pearl Island season, which was a fantastically unexpected season full of twists and turns and memorable characters (most of them assholes, yes, but where's the fun in having sixteen nice guys on tv every week?) and by far my favorite Survivor winner.

Where's The Amazing Race (Season 2)? Where's MST3k (Season 6)?

I think with the Simpsons, you really have to take a block of seasons. Like seasons 3-9 or something.

I watched the first 2 episodes of The Sopranos and was so uninterested I've never watched it again. So if Season 1 is supposedly the best...

Dexter - season 2
Six Feet Under - season 5
Lost - season 1
Breaking Bad - season 2
Charles In Charge - season 3

I wouldn't necessarily say Season 8 is the Simpson's best, but it is definitely the season the Simpsons went from being a great show to being a classic show. IMO, seasons 5 or 6 are near my top.
