Tiki refers to large wood and stone carvings of humanoid forms in Central Eastern Polynesian cultures of the Pacific Ocean. The term is also used as it relates to Māori mythology where Tiki is the first man.

In Polynesian mythology (specifically: Maori), Tiki is the first man, created by either Tu Matauenga or Tane. He found the first woman, Marikoriko, in a pond. She seduced him and he became the father of Hine-Kau-Ataata. Also in Polynesian mythology, a tiki or hei tiki is a kind of sculpture which results in a carving in the shape of a god. Each tiki houses a spirit. The creation of tikis is known from all over Polynesia.

According to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) legend, Hotu Matu'a, the first chief brought along a moai symbolizing ancestors, which became the model for the large moai. sorry, that may be what a hei tiki made in pounamu looks like, but the article clearly states that it was whale bone. while there are many historical jade tikis known, jade is still fairly easy for maoris to come by. whale bone is much harder. the maori are one of the few indigenous tribes still allowed to harvest whale bone, although only from dead, beached whales. much, much harder to replace. this doesn't speak to the innate historical value of the piece itself. i truly hope she gets it back as it's more than likely priceless. seeing how it was whale bone it was probably a patu or mere rather than a hei tiki.

oh, and the brady tiki was a painted POS cocoa joe's. not to mention not a kapu tiki at all, but rather a Ku style.

anyway, that's your tiki lesson for the day.
