There are 16 NL cities vs. 14 AL ones. 2 writers in each city get to vote, I think.

Only one other guy got a single first place vote (Cabrera) in the AL. So thats not going to make up the difference.

The AL has 14 teams. The NL has 16. So I'd say that the real reason is that there are 2 voters per team and that gets you the 4 additional votes.

Also, Mauer got 27 of 28 votes, not 28.

It is true that Pujols has not yet surpassed any of those players. But if the second half of his career even approaches the first half, he will surpass all of those players in virtually every category and be undeniably the best in history. Of course he could just as easily have his career cut short by injuries--Ralph Kiner was on his way to rivaling Babe Ruth for the greatest of all time title back in the day, but he had to retire after 10 years due to injury. Pujols has already surpassed all of Kiner's accomplishments, in nine years. Kiner is in the hall, and if Pujols plays one more year, he will be guaranteed a spot there. Even if he got hit by a bus and died tomorrow, they would bend the rules and let him in with only nine seasons under his belt.

I'm not saying Pujols isn't a great player - he is, undoubtedly. But to proclaim him "the best player ever" is homer hyperbole at best, sheer ignorance at worst. He might, with time, earn that title, but he has quite a ways to go yet.

Eh, I'm too tired to be reading and typing right now. I thought you were saying if he surpasses in the second half of his career what he's done in his first. Yeah, if he doesn't decline as much as most do with age, he'll definitely be up there.

Taking Bonds out of the equation, because he's a can of worms, Pujols is tied for 5th in career OPS+ (not a perfect stat, but pretty good, in a quick and dirty way). The guys above or tied with him all played through at least their age 36 seasons. The only guy I listed above who had a lesser career OPS+ was Mays, but he was such an outstanding fielder at a much tougher position, and was such a fantastic base runner, he gets extra points. And he played until he was 42.

I'm just saying, knowing that it's a HUGE "if" to say that he could maintain his level for another 9 years, but also knowing that he has been eerily consistent, and that it's common for people with good mechanics and good work ethic to be able to stay at a high level for around 18 years; with that caveat, just going with the thought experiment of him duplicating his first 9 years for another 9 years, he would be third in homeruns (counting Bonds), second in RBI, seventh in Runs, second in doubles, tenth in walks, sixth in hits, and in the top 20 in average. Add in a couple of garbage years of limited production (all the people above him on those lists had careers of at least 20 years) and he would be first in every category except hit, walks and average, and in those categories, no one ahead of him would have nearly the power numbers he would have. So if those things happened, and they aren't far fetched at all, he would be easy lock for greatest of all time, in my opinion.
