It doesn't look like the baby was ever in danger though. I've seen that exact same stance in many dogs (and I can tell from the pixels). The dog was just fascinated by this small furry creature and would have bounced around and snuffled at the baby till it crawled back up the tree.

Isn't that what most modern "newsmedia" orgs do these days? Rip off blogs and personal pages for their human interest stories? Its easier than doing the work themselves, and most people are so flattered at the attention they don't realize how badly they just got screwed.

Squirrels can definately be vicious when it comes to protecting their young. There have been a few in my back yard that start hissing at me when I get near a tree, and I have no doubt they'd pounce on me if I came any closer.

One of the best times I ever had was sitting on my front porch, drinking a beer, watching a mocking bird defend it's nest against the neighbor's cat. That cat got the sheat beat out of him by that bird, yet he kept coming back for more. I'm sure the cat's owners were wondering where all these beak-shaped puncture wounds came from...

2: "fuzzy fuzzy snuf snuf snuf HEY OW"

Several years ago I was cleaning out a bunch of old leaves from my apartment flower planter (long skinny rectangular thing) and had a complete flipout when 1.) a squirrel darted out of the pile, then 2.) I saw two baby squirrels right afterward. We're talking HAIRLESS newborn squirrels, not the cute fluffy one in the link. My hubby the Eagle Scout had to come and put babies back in the pile of leaves on the now-slim chance that mama would come back to relocate them. Thankfully she did, after a couple hours. You don't mess with mama squirrel when it comes to the babies.

How can you say you love squirrels when the situation you described is obvously not love, just a physical attraction born out of hunger. If it had been a cat or a dog or any other animal they would have done the same thing. That's lust, not love. Squirrels deserve better than that. The love I share with squirrels is both far deeper, and much more meaningful.

I usually throw my food scraps outside for the critters, and one day a squirrel was yelling (in their chattery way) at me for being in "his" yard while holding an orange peel I gave him! So of course I yelled back that the bottom ten feet of the yard were mine and he should STFO or I wasn't gonna give him any more treats.

...Then I realized my nosy neighbors who watch everything have more proof I'm crazy.

I remember one time with my huge dog, Rex. We walked past a house where a mother cat had given birth under some bushes in front. The cat saw Rex and without provocation or preamble immediately walked up and slashed my dog about a blue million times right across the face and then walked back to her kittens. Rex was a Baby Huey kind of dog who deferred to cats and was on a short leash, but that didn't make no nevermind to the momma.

/Don't Fark with the momma.

I get it that the big-balled squirrel is relevant in a "the history of Fark" sort of way, but am I the only one who just doesn't really see anything terribly funny about the original photo itself or the billions of subsequent references to it?

Everyone Else: It's a squirrel with big testicles.
RoBByBoy: Uh-huh. And?
Everyone Else: And... that's funny.
RoBByBoy: Why is that funny?
Everyone Else: Um... I don't know.

Seriously, looks like the dog wanted to play or was curious. If it was in attack mode it would already have had the squirrel in its mouth. Not saying it wouldn't have changed its mind later, but it really looked curious to me. (my child hood boxer would have swallowed it by the first shot based on what I saw her do to blackbirds)

Hmm, interesting... I've seen people using 'of instead of 've (as in -must'of been brilliant!-) but this is the first time I've seen somone doing the opposite.

Anyways, dog seemed to only be interested in playing with baby squirrel but it's not as if mom squirrel had any way to know that.
