idrow: Montreal? WTF?

Montreal is easily over shadowed by the high profile traditional mob families of New York, but is deemed by many as an equal, if not more powerful than some.
Boom

Okay that didn't really make sense. So I'll just make it easy and say Montreal has a big Mafia family.

I guess some towns just don't like Italians organised crime.

K, here's a little background: Vito Rizzuto (new window) went to prison in the U.S. recently, then Salvatore Montagno (new window) got deported from New York back to Montreal. I wonder what could possibly be happening up there.

Mel's Bells: There's mafia in Canada?

There's organised crime everywhere, and given that Montréal is a busy port city with powerful blue-collar union representation, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Concerning the string of firebombings that have been occurring lately, the common consensus is that it's due to a relatively low level drug war that has, unfortunately, escalated - and as the coffee shops act as money laundering fronts, they're being targeted by the respective belligerents in the conflict.

FTFA: Police say a Mafia turf war, an offensive by street gangs, or copycat arsonists could be behind the firebombings.

Heck, while we're at it, let's not leave out Bigfoot, Aliens, Disgruntled Grandmothers and Imaginary Italian Chefs.

Sorry, Mel's Bells, it looks like people are pulling your leg here. There is no crime in Canada, organized or otherwise, beyond the occasional pemmican theft or turf war over beaver hunting grounds (the Peltway Sniper incident a few years back was pretty bad).

Police: You wouldn't happen to know anything about a cafe that got firebombed?

Mob: What's a cafe?
