He said "instinct" told him to grab a nearby samurai sword from his collection of weapons.

So... neither the mace, nor the battle ax, nor the bow, nor the spear were up to the task. When in doubt, go straight for the katana.

:-/

I'm partial to a Browning Light 12 semi-auto with the shortie barrel, reduced stock, and packing five 00 buckshot rounds, personally.

But that's just me.

Oh, no disagreement. The use of a katana is automatic awesome points. It was the "collection of weapons" I was commenting on and curious about. ;)

I've always wondered why these stories always say "samurai sword". Don't most people, especially farkers, know what a katana is by this point in time? Can't we use the proper name?

Why are you so sure it was a katana and not a wakizashi? Either one qualifies as a samurai sword, and if the guy's a collector, he might have paired swords.

Sorry, but if I was intruding a home, the weapon that would scare me off the easiest (besides any sort of firearm of course) would be the Katana.

I mean a mace? ok I can deal with that. A flail? Dude youll put your eye out. A Katana? Aww fark.

Prosecutors told the court after a "thorough review" they had concluded "there was no reasonable prospect of conviction".

So it wasn't that the prosecutors realized the guys actions were completely righteous and prosecuting him would be a horrible thing to do to a guy who was just trying to protect his family; it was that they didn't think they could get a jury composed of the kind of heartless dickheads that they are.

Jezz. Sounds like the cops would've had a helluva a time with this idiot if the homeowner hadn't softened him up a bit first. Seriously, once someone gets stabby with you, the smart move is to take the hint and go away.

Heh. I can just imagine the scene. Intuder at the door won't leave. He runs to the weapons collection, picks up an axe. Nah. Puts that aside. The spear? Nah, too long. The hammer? Weighs it thoughtfully in his and before rejecting it. Not enough range. Hand-and-a-half sword? Nah, just a bit too heavy, and he's pretty sure he won't be trying to hack through armor. The katana? Ah, perfect.

He goes to answer the door.

I was trying to find an all-encompassing term for the others. Medieval didn't fly, the best I had to go with was "old-fashioned."

How about primitive? Yeah, that's better.

Perhaps I'm just missing something here, but it if there's a security door up keeping the intruder from entering... what's the problem?

Why not just call the cops and go back to sleep (or what ever it was that he was doing in the shed).

No worries - you're right, I know the sense of the word you're looking for, but can't nail it down.

Archaic? Barbarian? Un-Subtle? Straightforward? Un-Mechanized? Simple melee? Meh, it's in there somewhere.

Wouldn't simple 'hand weapons' fit? The bow is the only projectile.

No, that WOULDN'T fit. A simple long (or short) bow would 'fit' in the sense I'm looking for. "Primitive" and "un-mechanized" seem to work best... but "un-mechanized" is such a clumsy term.

By the way, Ferro... I took a look at your website, and I'm liking what I see. I wouldn't mind having one of those hackey sacks. I can imagine the look on my friends' faces if I suggested a game (especially since I haven't done it in years), and pulled out a sack made of metal.

baka-san: Why was he being charged???

1. It happened in Australia. (See England)
2. From inside his home, he stabbed a drunken man who was standing outside banging on the screen door. At no time was the drunk inside the home, and it isn't clear what threat the drunk posed to the family. Essentially, he got all stabby against someone who was trespassing outside.

See the case of Yoshiatiro Hattori for when this kind of situation has a worse outcome.
