What the thieves pulled off isn't easy. Gotta bring the truck in, use a swinger or bobcat to pick up the palleted hives. So once everything's loaded and strapped you stand in the head lights and let the crawlers fly off to sting the bright and shiny lights and then get the hell out of there. Oh, and the bees are not caged in their hives. They come out. They don't navigate well at night but there's 15,000 or so per hive that are willing to die to come out and meet you. I usually screen mine in when I load them into the van - the fewer flying friends helping me drive the better. The commercial beekeepers - they don't do that. They often move the bees at night, and closing them in - hah. Oh, there are laws about bee nets and that sort of thing but you put those on miles down the road. A box is a box is a box, and bees don't carry cards with their home number and address.

Pity the owner didn't have any GPS frames in the hives. Odds are though that those hives are already parked in an outyard being fed pollen and sugar water (and likely already on promise to a broker). Or broken up for splits. Bees are big business because almonds are big business.
