Hey, if the school allows students to wear _any_ kind of political or religious commentary at all, then they pretty much have to allow this.

Yes, you do, but I don't believe children should be subject to unreasonable searches and seizures, either. Children should not forfeit their rights to free speech at the school house door, particularly when you get to high school. As long as the speech activity is not inherently disruptive, I don't think the school has any business censoring students in such a manner.

What for? Admittedly, my philosophy on free speech is deep libertarian - Hugo Black absolutist - and tends to skew out of the mainstream. I suppose I don't think you should be able to shout "FIRE" in a crowded theater, but there's no reason you can't whisper it to the person next to you.

GET THE FARK OFF MY LAWN, WHIPPERSNAPPER!!!!

My mom took me school shopping

It was me, my brother, my mom, oh, my pop, and my little sister

All hopped in the car

We headed downtown to the Gallery Mall

My mom started bugging with the clothes she chose

I didn't say nothing at first

I just turned up my nose

She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20"

I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

The next half hour was the same old thing

My mother buying me clothes from 1963

And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate

I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!

I said, "Mom, what are you doing, you're ruining my rep"

She said, "You're only sixteen, you don't have a rep yet"

I said, "Mom, let's put these clothes back, please"

She said "no, you go to school to learn not for a fashion show"

I said, "This isn't Sha Na Na, come on Mom, I'm not Bowzer

Mom, please put back the bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousers

But if you don't want to I can live with that but

You gotta put back the double-knit reversible slacks"

She wasn't moved - everything stayed the same

Inevitably the first day of school came

GAT_00: I have no clue what reference you're making.

Sigh.

Back in 1987 or so there was a rap group called "DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince". One of their hits was called "Parents just don't understand", and it included the lyric "You go to school to work, not for a fashion show", said by the Fresh Prince like he was imitating his mother saying it.

The Fresh Prince soon moved to Bel Air to be on a television show, and later dropped the nickname altogether, now going by the name "Will Smith".

They are pretty nuts from the looks of things - I see the ACLU as a fairly moderate group though too many people are so far right that they'd think I'm on the left.

WTF is going on in that picture? I am wondering if people are seeing liberals (as a political group) and thinking liberties which, honestly, has nothing to do with liberals. I suppose one could say that civil liberties have a natural leaning leftward bent but this is the same group who's repeatedly advocated FOR gun ownership rights, as an example, and maybe I'm skewed but it appears (to me) that they're mostly moderate or centrist.

GaryPDX 2009-11-23 08:22:09 PM
Technically, students in high school are minors and not afforded full rights of adult citizens, including free speech. Having said that, they are usually bursting at the seams to express themselves, just look at the Emo's. I can tell ya'll this, in the Democratic Republic of Oregon, if a student wears and "Libruls suck the big one and need to burn" Tshirt to school, I might get a call to pick up my kid. The blade swings and the kids need room to breath.

The ACLU supports the whole separation of church and state thing, so they are often at odds with conservative Christian groups. They also will side with Christian groups from time to time though.

I'm down with blasphemy but that shirt just takes it to mouth-breather levels. Would rather see the ACLU step up more often to protect guest-lecturers that are often prevented from speaking on North American campuses by violent Islamist demonstrators bent on intimidating and even harming attendees.

I see no reason kids should wear political T-shirts to school. It's the same reason they shouldn't be worn to work, if you have even a shred of professionalism.

Many Christians are insane. Many of the people who hate them are too. They both amuse me to no end though. (I think they forgot the whole Jesus thing, on both sides.) But yeah, though I think people have sort of trashed the way that whole amendment was meant but who knows? I wasn't there. If pissing off fundies makes me a liberal than I'm going to go join a church.

Hmm... Then again? If wanting responsible gun ownership to be protected makes me a conservative I'm going to go hug some trees and eat tofu.

I never could figure out how people are so comfortable in boxes. Some say they're a conservative, others are a liberal, I just think I'm a human.

Bah... Head is muddy with blissful fentanyl (got it cheap too), marijuana, and beer. It is a lovely combination - I recommend it for all but the faint of heart.

It could, again, just be me but I don't see them as particularly left or right. I do imagine liberties are typically left leaning but should not be taken for liberals given that liberals are seemingly far removed from liberty. I could go on for hours but I'll spare you the details of my befuddlement.
