Things are getting better, especially on the credential-recognition side. This is good, because we have far too many engineers and geologists driving cabs.

I also wouldn't say that immigrants are specifically discriminated against on racial or cultural grounds, so much as I'd say that naturalized Canadians are more likely to share common cultural ancestry as those that are hiring. It's not unreasonable to expect that that leads to a comfort level that benefits natural born Canadians, most of whom are of European ancestry. Causation vs. correlation, that sort of thing.

That said, if you're thinking of emigrating to Canada, and you're hardworking and educated, get your ass over here, pronto. I don't care where you're from, what color you are, who you worship, or what language you speak. What is going to be the Canadian advantage from here on out isn't that we're harder working (we certainly aren't), that we're smarter (we aren't), or that we're better educated (we aren't).

What will secure our future economic place in the world is by being a stable and secure international bridge of cultures, languages, ideas, and business contacts.

Immigrants to Canada tend to make less in the workforce and are more likely to settle for part-time work and temporary jobs over full-time work than Canadian-born workers, the latest study from Statistics Canada suggests.

well, duh.

What I'd like to see is stats on how children of immigrants are doing, especially immigrants from less developed countries.

I work for a large software corp and the vast majority of workers here are Indian now. They segregate the white workers to a little corner and after 5 the place becomes like a Bollywood movie. Lots of really loud boisterous giggling like children and jokes(?) in Hindi. Makes it almost impossible to get work done.

Also they have Indian-only "meetings" which are basically parties (no Americans need show up).

Misleading statistics are misleading.

Immigrant works are willing to work for lower pay, and work harder because they have very little social safety net (ie family and friends) to take risks. And employers take full advantage of it. After 10 years or so the gap narrows to 10%... But the prejudices remain for a long time.

Immigrants who come to Canada have nearly nothing. They work hard and they make something... Respect it.

/Been in Canada 12 years.
//Parents worked incredibly hard

Meh.

Canadians are an immigrant people. I'm Anglo-Canadian but my family is second generation on one side and third on the other. My Grandfather still flies the Union Jack on his lawn. If immigrants are willing to come in and work hard, great. We need more hard workers. Canada is an underpopulated and underdeveloped new world nation almost completely devoid of its original peoples. To think that the only immigrants who are "Canadian" are second or third generation (or more) is completely untrue to reality.

That's pretty common in Vancouver where there are Asian only malls. In addition - more Indians go to Canada because its easier to get in than the US.

Compared with their Canadian-born counterparts, employed immigrants aged 25 to 54 are younger, more likely to be male, have higher levels of post-secondary education and tend to work in smaller firms, the study found.
==============================================

Last I checked, immigrants aged 25 to 54 are the same age as employed canadian born people aged 25 to 54.

/If they're trying to say that immigrants tend to be toward the bottom of that age gap, they picked a retarded way to say it.
//Not to mention that Canada (like most other countries) does not accept old people as immigrants unless they want to get married to a Canadian.

The hardest adjustment as and American I had with working with Asians (Indians specifically) is the whole "saving face" thing.

They get offended REALLY easily. And wont show it. One time my team was testing VOIP software which requires some level of quiet, and the whole Bollywood party was going on in the lab. My team could not hear each other so I got up and politely asked them to keep it down, we're trying to work.

The next day my boss calls me in and tells me they complained about me. She sided with me of course but damn. To me that is a cowardly and shiatty thing to do. But in their minds I was at fault for "shaming" them and making them lose face. My boss summed it up for me: "different cultures".

I can point your rednecks if you like

From what I've seen, strangely, the US gets most of the illegal mexicans, while Canada gets the legals. This slightly changed when the US started to get harder with Mexico, and started to steer away, but the number rised only slowly. Also canadian coyotes were usually in suits, were Quebecois, and gave "immigration talks" in hotels (I know this, because I was in one, I wanted info on the student visa, and the ad on the papers said that they helped with the paperwork. Needless to say I walked away in disgust, and wrote an email to the canadian embassy, asking if their methods were known), taking advantage of the refugee status.

Also, I think illegal immigration should be farking over with. But in my country's case, it won't until we do something about it. I'd like to think that my generation is more conscious about our situation, but truth be told the majority is as duped as the generation after me.

I love my country, nonetheless, I love my culture and most of what it means to be mexican, but I'd hate to leave my country. Unfortunately, it's pushing me to that decision.

Who knows, maybe I'll end up applying for Spaniard, French, or American citizenship if things go for the worse.

They buy the expensive homes like some kind of trophies and refuse to do proper upkeep of the property! I've seen this in several subs here in SE Michigan.

As much as we like to deny it, there is still widespread discrimination based on race, culture, language, and religion in Canada. And, it's not simply the "white, early immigrant, majority" doing the discriminating. Also, "naturalized Canadians" isn't the correct nomenclature, as it literally means people who have immigrated to Canada and acquired Canadian citizenship. It doesn't mean "people who have learned to fit in with the mainstream."

What will secure our future economic place in the world is by being a stable and secure international bridge of cultures, languages, ideas, and business contacts.

True that. The trick will continue to be how to manage collective rights and difference in a framework of liberal, individual rights (even though our official multiculturalism policy plus the issue of dealing with First Nations sovereignty put us firmly on the track of a culturally-federated society bound by a mainly secular legal framework).
