No bagged leafy greens. The greens from dozens of fields are mixed together, so there's more chance of contamination. It's better to buy whole heads of lettuce.

And no hamburgers. "My growth industry lately has been frozen, preform patties," he said. Scrap meat from thousands of cows gets mixed together at processing plants, so there's no telling what you're getting. If you don't cook them all the way through - which most people don't - any bacteria might survive.

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, counselor, are you telling me you haven't found a store with a meat department where they grind the meat fresh, even to order? I have a grinder attachment on my Kitchen-Aid and I grind my own hamburger blend from time to time (chuck and sirloin). Stop being an alarmist weenie.

Precisely. Just don't buy a box of goddam frozen patties. Who the hell does that anyway?

I do that as well. Totally worth the effort. Plus you can throw other things in there while grinding.

I occasionally buy Trader Joe's buffalo burgers.

Also, if a restaurant/pub has Wagyu burgers, I will not order those well done.

I work at a fashionable "organic-focused" grocery store and I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

No, really, we had a meat-patty scare last month. Hundreds of recalls. Last time I buy pre-ground beef.

Buy a steer from a rancher and have it processed at a reputable processing plant. Cheaper and healthier!

So when I buy ground beef in the meat section at Vons, and it's all nice and red and fresh looking, with a Vons label on it saying how much it weighs and what percentage fat it has, is that safe or not according to this guy.

Forget the issue of thorough cooking. I'm far more concerned with cows who are being fed everything from growth hormones to... well, other cows in their feed.

I grew up on a cattle ranch and ate plenty of beef in my time, but it was always clean and unadulterated. I can't bring myself to eat what they sell in most supermarkets.

Can I play?

raw oysters - You bet! Only when there's an 'R' in the month, though
raw fish - Absolutely, as long as it's from a good sushi bar.
sprouts - Brussels, yes - food of the Gods. Nastly little salad-bar things? - only the ones I've grown myself.
bagged leafy greens - Sure. Wash them first, though.
hot dogs - Only on special occasions, like the Blessing of the Fleet.
unpasteurized juice or milk - Sure. Juice if I make it myself - milk if I know the farmer.
hamburgers - sure, from a butcher who makes them from low-fat ground beef. Balducci, for example.

Isnt the "red and fresh looking" effect from the CO2 they expose it to? Dont really remember, but still eat it.

How the f*ck have we survived as a species all these millennia ?

Sure, there is stuff out there that can make you sick and kill you but don't be such a nancy.

Auto accidents kill more people every year than anything else, but I'm guessing lawyer boy still drives.

color is not an indication of freshness - many butchers and grocery stores color their meat so that it appears like they ground it 10 minutes ago, regardless of the actual age of the meat.

Yep, I don't get it either but I know plenty of folks (men and women) for whom that's the only way they know. We've created a culture of total convenience.

Well then, he's an idiot who doesn't understand issues of scale: for every case of tainted food he has dealt with, there were tons of un-tainted food that were produced, distributed, and consumed without incident.

I bet gynecologists aren't as interested in pussy anymore after they've seen hundreds of diseased vaginas up close, either.
