Dresses and skirts have always seemed like a strange idea to me. I like how they look on an attractive woman, but I've always wondered what is the basis of tradition that dresses and skirts are feminine and pants are masculine? Clearly pants have a utility in work or play situations where one may not remain upright. A person wearing a dress or skirt is considered to be fully clothed even though the article does not fully enclose the area it is covering. It's effectiveness is entirely gravity dependent and socially dependent upon people not obtaining an inappropriate viewing angle. It's a relatively fragile construct. As to being only for women, ironically from a comfort standpoint the looseness of a dress might seem to benefit men more, yet beyond kilt-wearing in certain places this concept is not fashionable with western men. Might the volume and openness of the dress be a fertility symbol, creating the petals in a flower metaphor? Is it meant to symbolize the reproductive role by suggesting utility in childbearing, in that a hypothetical birth, or the act of impregnating for that matter, would be unobstructed by pants? Such anti-feminist meanings seem unlikely because nobody seems to be outraged along those lines, but I note certain conservative Christian sects have women always wearing dresses and not pants, so what does that mean? Or is it just that dresses and skirts are comfortable and pretty and look stupid on men, but women can wear anything? Any anthropologists help me out here?
