(Austin Daily Herald) Amusing Grandparents are cool because they let you do things mom and dad won't. Like, say, hanging onto the luggage rack of a Ford Escort while they do drunken donuts on the lawn   (austindailyherald.com) divider line 72

My Grandpa is cool because he had the best toys when I was a kid.....lawn darts, a 3-wheel ATV, .22 rifles, etc.

Damn, all I got to do was buy cigs from the vending machine and bring the bottle to the table at the VFW for my gramps.

He admitted that he drove with his grandson on the roof and that he had been drinking beforehand.

Christgau also admitted to having an open can of beer in the vehicle during the incident...

Gramps is about as sharp as a marble.shiat. Should've RTFA. At least he didn't let the kids handle alcohol.

DWI a gross misdemeanor? Must be because it was on his own property rather than the streets.

We had six feet of snow a few years back. I tied a sled to the back of my truck and towed my daughter around the block several times. She had a blast. Then I read an article right here on Fark where someone was charged for doing the exact same thing. Oops.

"The Folks" never seem to get the hang of inflation.

"Ya know, back in the day, I only paid $5,000 for my first house. You are getting cheated today"

"Yes, Dad, but remember, you only brought home $40 a week"

"Yup. I could fill up my car for a buck-fifty back when I got my first job. A dollar was a dollar back then, lemme tell ya!"

I was unfortunate enough to own a Ford Escort and the kid was lucky to be going in circles faster than 5 mph, no doughnuts in sight... If you wanted to make it up a hill in one of those cars you had to mash the accelerator almost a full minute before even getting to the hill...

My grandpa stopped letting me play with his .22 rifle when I was 12. After that, he insisted that I was "man enough to handle" the .45 pistol he had from his time in the army, and his bolt-action .30-06 rifle.

\To this day, I prefer using a bolt-action over semi-auto any day of the week.

meh that's nothing... my grandparents would let my cousins, older brothers & I tear up their house. They wouldn't care if we spilled liquid bleach on the carpet or even better yet spill liquid fabric softener & see old grandpa slip & fall. I didn't do that but my cousin did. All I did was make sure their toilets always over flowed when I would stay a week during Christmas Vacation & a week during the Summer...

This. Sounds like something my dad would do back in his drinking days. I still remember all the times we went out motorbiking (off-road) - he and my cousins would booze up and have a hell of a time. I had a head-on with him once, him on his older mid-sized bike, me on a tank of a Honda - tore up his leg something good, but he was so lubricated he pretty much walked it off before heading to the hospital for stitches.

We had a lot of fun as kids...

well what's cool is when we did all this they didn't care. most grandparents would spaz out but my grandparents just knew we were kids. My mom's mom was a badass though since she would give us free reign of her house while my grandfather would freak out for the first 15min or so.

My grandmother was interesting... to say the least. When I was a young, we would often drive to the grocery store and she would have me run inside to get whatever it was she needed. The reason why I had to run inside is because grandma usually stayed in her slippers and her snap up house dress or house coat.

Anywho, we stopped at a light one day. Some high schoolers in the car next to us decided it would be cool to moon us. It was at that point grandma ripped open her house dress and gave them a view that I am sure scared them for life.

I'm 30 now but I still remember walking two blocks to the local gas station to buy his Marlboro Reds for him. He no longer smokes but is surprisingly still alive, walking and breathing on his own. Those were the days.

sense of humor
musical and artistic talent
gas
baldness
"borrowing" the family car and being caught by parents via odometer tracking, as family tradition goes back 3 generations now, 4 whenever I eventually have kids
