They had a pretty good program, actually, until the past few years. They regularly knocked off what were then called I-A opponents. Before the creation of the Division I subdivisions, they were very good, the best team in the northeast for about a decade.

this is a sad day for football. the big 10 did well with this team as part of their conference, and despite a rough few seasons, i don't think cancelling the program entirely is good for the conference, the school, or college football as a whole.

this is a sad, sad day.

Good hockey program.

A guy from my high school played at Northeastern.

We always overrated the athletes at my high school, thought they would definitely go to a top D-1 school but they would always go to a school like Northeastern. I couldn't even imagine how awesome pro athletes must have looked like in high school.

Living in Boston as a Northwestern alum, I can say that the confusion between these two schools happens way too often. Oh well, that's what I get for going to a directional school.

1) You've still got a good hockey program that plays in the Beanpot
2) Now, your Northeastern football shirts are a snarky in-joke, much like my "NYU Football" shirt.

I originally read it as Northwestern and was happy because they wouldn't be around to beat IU in football when we were up 28-3 in the 2nd quarter.

I thought that whole thing was just started by some OSU alumni in the NFL trying to be cute for the MNF introductions.

I also sincerely hope people in south Florida haven't always been walking around proclaiming to be fans of "The U"

The "The Ohio State" thing was the culmination of a $250,000 marketing project. The conclusion was to highlight the "the" that is present in nearly all public universities' names that date back to the 19th century.

I graduated in '05, so it was some time before that. But I'm sure they chanted it last year, too. Their team finally got good and still wasn't the best Boston team. Too bad the Terriers suck this year.

Shouldn't they honor the scholarships of the players to anywhere they could try to get in on the football team? "I came here for the education and to play football".

outside of the big, big schools, in the big conferences, that belong to the BCS, American Football is a drain to the athletics budget, and is a violent sport that causes severe lifetime disabilities and dementia.

As someone who was recruited to run track and play football at Northeastern, but only offered a partial athletic scholarship, and I didn't want to be in debt to a state school disguised as an overpriced extension of high school, I did the only thing a sane person would have done: I actually went to state school, which is an inexpensive extension of high school and I focused on Northeastern athletes and beat them with reckless abandon every single time I faced them in college.

I still feel for that program and their students but look at it this way:
At least they're not attending an insanely overpriced extension of high school with half the education quality but twice the pretentious attitude.

/I'm looking at you BC
//Never lost to BC athletes either
///I kicked a BC grad off of an assembly line last year. A F'ing assembly line!
////I did lose to some tall skinny black dude from UConn one year

TomServo24 2009-11-23 06:15:30 PM
It's unfathomable how the Northeastern football program failed when their stadium was practically right in the middle of campus. All you had to do was take the Green Line E train inbound 3 stop to Copley Sq., then take an outbound D train 4 or 5 stops to Longwood, then walk 15 minutes into a random neighborhood in Brookline and BAM - you're right there, along with the other 150 fans that managed to show up that day.

hnlzero 2009-11-23 06:32:54 PM
Well going to Northeastern means you lose by default.

\hate BU, the dook of college hockey
\\and when you're a FCS school and it's almost two miles to your football stadium from your "holy shiat we have a campus??" campus, you're gonna have problems with your football program....

FriarReb98 [TotalFark] 2009-11-23 09:01:28 PM
BTW, wasn't NU's defection to the Colonial the beginning of the dismantling of the A-10 (Yankee) football conference?

Klivian [TotalFark] 2009-11-23 10:16:43 PM
Yea, this is what happens when you have a "stadium" that could barely pass for a bit of grass, and the student body couldn't give less of a damn

As an NU alum, all I want to know is if I can still select NU as my school when I create myself in Madden

jht [TotalFark] 2009-11-24 08:00:35 AM
bubbaprog: They had a pretty good program, actually, until the past few years. They regularly knocked off what were then called I-A opponents. Before the creation of the Division I subdivisions, they were very good, the best team in the northeast for about a decade.

Wait, what? They had one trip to the 1-AA playoffs in their history (2002). No winning seasons since going 8-3 in 2003. They've never been a truly competitive team as far back as I can recall (and I went there in the early '80s). Basically, this is a program that had a couple of good years in the early '90s , but otherwise typically had 2-3 winning years per decade.

Add that to a facility that was basically a high school field in the next town, an apathetic student body at best, and football at NU was pretty much just a cash sink from the rest of the teams. A strong football program at a college can be a big source of revenue for the rest of the athletic program, but if you're not in the black it's real expensive.

BU had a program that was better than NU's in every way, drew more fans, and was much more competitive each year, but they still shut it down over a decade ago and the world kept spinning. Football and city schools with a large commuter contingent just may not be the best match.

The hockey and basketball programs there have a long history of good teams and good attendance. Taking the resources that football drained and putting them to use in the stronger programs is probably good for the school.

One other note: I looked up the all-time record of the team just now. One coach since 1971 had a winning record (Don Brown - 27-20 in 4 years from 2000-2003). All-time winning percentage - .447. A lot of meh there.
