Amazing. The ones with some "flaws" look more realistic than the ones with perfect skin/tone.

Next step is to make them move and talk. I saw a TV episode of some anthology show once. They made a CGI copy of a news anchorman. Eventually the killed the real one. CGIs don't age, ask for raises.

Same with actors, then you can do some creative casting.
Like using Clark Gable or Jimmy Stewart with modern stars.

No offence, but not even one of those looked real to me. Very nice, but not real.

MysticSavage 2009-11-23 11:36:41 AM
The Morgan Freeman and Terry O'Quinn ones are by far the best. As someone who's getting back into the CG game, man, I got a long way to go!

Pyrogenesis 2009-11-23 11:37:17 AM
Damn, I worked tech support in the same studio as Piotr Fox Wysocki. 16th pic is his self portrait.

ActionJoe 2009-11-23 11:38:13 AM
Impressive, but it appears no one has figured out how to do eyes well. Most of the eyes in these portraits are very shiny or very reflective.

MiddleAgedWoman 2009-11-23 11:38:43 AM
These are well done. A lot I recognize as being done in Poser. I use this software professionally, and know the tricks needed to make something look real. If you have a decent enough skin to put on the model,(commercially available even to newbies) you can get a fairly good image straight off the render. The trick comes in the details. Facial hair, for example, looks fine if you don't look to close, and realize it's not casting the right shadow, or ends abruptly at the jawline. That's where the skill comes in.

The_Original_Roxtar 2009-11-23 11:39:37 AM
the chimp looked the most realistic to me.

This one was pretty spectacular. Morgan Freeman, Old Samurai, and Russell Crow were outstanding.

Seems like Maya gives the best results.

I used to want to do this. Only problem is at that time (and I'll bet it's still the same today) you had to have a pretty good background in math, and I've never liked doing math.

Had a guy who worked with us that did work on Godzilla and Deep Space Nine. He said it was probably just as well that I didn't get into it since there were a dime a dozen artists out there. On some of the supplimental clips on the Matrix series they showed some of the high rez laser captures they did. Looked pretty good. I wonder how much farther we've come now.

Not even the chimp, the rainy street, or the NYC apartment?

The reason CG humans tend to always look "so fake" isn't that they're not as well-done as other CG. It's that our brains are so specialized in looking at other humans, that anything even slightly off (at the unconscious level) immediately alerts us that something is "wrong."

its a great version of a bonobo...but the creator was not able to duplicate the fur on the head effectively. still one of the best.

I thought the chimp one was the most impressive. It'd be interesting to see how many people could pick that image out of a line-up as the CG.

ActionJoe: eyes

Eyes? For me the lips, particularly on the realdoll-looking women, are the thing that falls flat. That's where the lady in green (above) really loses it for me. Too much perfection about the mouth.

/Oh, okay. The chimp and the apartment were pretty damn good. But I stand by my statement concerning the others. It was like a collection of post-mortem photos IMHO.

You know how else to make a portrait on a computer? A farking CAMERA.

proteon 2009-11-23 12:01:50 PM
We're getting there. I still wouldn't mistake one of these for an actual photo which no offense to the artist is the ultimate end of this art for the sake of media manipulation yadda yadda blah blah blah.

forcebender [TotalFark] 2009-11-23 12:02:00 PM
I dunno, most of them look very plastic looking to me. They need to dial back the reflectivity of the skin.

That, and it seems most designers are aiming for some perfect ideal form. How about adding some pores to a person's face.

That's an interesting graph, but how does it continue past "healthy human" along the "human likeness" axis? How can something have twice as much human likeness as a healthy human being?

Ook 2009-11-23 12:16:31 PM
the skin is too luminous and too smooth, the ones where they had some more subtle flaws looked better but still not quite there. the chimp's skin tone too luminous as well. some of these would have been great as 'paintings' but not as 'pictures'

we're still in uncanny valley I'm afraid.
